I read this after reading Fred Burton's Ghost. I found this book very interesting. You get a great sense of Burton's curiosity as his interest in the cold case spanned several decades. Burton's position in DSS put him in a special place to be involved in the tangled intersection of criminal and counterterrorist investigations. The book gives glances into the secret intersections of politics, policy, intelligence operations, and state sponsored terrorism. Burton's book does a great job of unravelling a mystery which involves Maryland suburban cops, war heroes, clandestine intelligence operatives, and Department of Defense policy. Burton places the story in its important historical context. Maybe most important is that his investigation feels very personal. It makes sense because shooting someone to death as he comes home from a date with his wife is a very personal crime - even when its motivations (or justifications) are rooted in interstate conflict. Also cann't believe I am the first review.

I am an inveterate reader of espionage fiction. I also spent more than 25 years working internationally, much of that time holding a "Top Secret" security clearance. This book by Fred Burton affords excellent insight into the world as it really is. The reality of espionage and international intrigue is far more compelling than fiction. And Fred is both a highly competent operative and a truly great story teller. I would not want Fred after me!!
