Bill Clinton had barely been unleashed upon America, when the mythology started to grow. In 1992 the Republicans insisted he was nothing more than the "failed governor of a small southern state", but Americans had a feeling he would soon be running their country so they wanted to know more. My Life is not a great book, in places it's not even that good - but when you read it, you can't help but feel you're in the company, one on one, of the man himself. It's his voice you hear on the page, for good and sometimes ill.

It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who, through his own enormous energies and efforts, made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House—a journey fueled by an impassioned interest in the political process which manifested itself at every stage of his life: in college, working as an intern for Senator William Fulbright; at Oxford, becoming part of the Vietnam War protest movement; at Yale Law School, campaigning on the grassroots level for Democratic candidates; back in Arkansas, running for Congress, attorney general, and governor. We see his career shaped by his resolute determination to improve the life of his fellow citizens, an unfaltering commitment to civil rights, and an exceptional understanding of the practicalities of political life.We come to understand the emotional pressures of his youth—born after his father’s death; caught in the dysfunctional relationship between his feisty, nurturing mother and his abusive stepfather, whom he never ceased to love and whose name he took; drawn to the brilliant, compelling Hillary Rodham, whom he was determined to marry; passionately devoted, from her infancy, to their daughter, Chelsea, and to the entire experience of fatherhood; slowly and painfully beginning to comprehend how his early denial of pain led him at times into damaging patterns of behavior.President Clinton’s book is also the fullest, most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written—encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency actually works: the day-to-day bombardment of problems, personalities, conflicts, setbacks, achievements. It is a testament to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals. It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and unrelenting assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right, and how he survived and prevailed. It is a treasury of moments caught alive, among them:• The ten-year-old boy watching the national political conventions on his family’s new (and first) television set.• The young candidate looking for votes in the Arkansas hills and the local seer who tells him, “Anybody who would campaign at a beer joint in Joiner at midnight on Saturday night deserves to carry one box. . . . You’ll win here. But it’ll be the only damn place you win in this county.” (He was right on both counts.)• The roller-coaster ride of the 1992 campaign.• The extraordinarily frank exchanges with Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole.• The delicate manipulation needed to convince Rabin and Arafat to shake hands for the camera while keeping Arafat from kissing Rabin.• The cost, both public and private, of the scandal that threatened the presidency. Here is the life of a great national and international figure, revealed with all his talents and contradictions, told openly, directly, in his own completely recognizable voice. A unique book by a unique American.

A very detailed account of President Clinton's childhood and early political career. It was as honest an autobiography can be, which highlights his accomplishments and his well-documented short-comings. I give him credit for being balanced on both the positive and the negative but I suppose that there are still some private aspects that the public will never get to know. Overall, it's a worthwhile read that requires some patience since it is quite lengthy. There's a second volume that discusses his two terms in office, which is not covered in this review.

A fantastic memoir of former President Bill Clinton. Clinton shows both his best and worse traits and his often flawed life story. And unlike most autobiographies, Mr. Clinton wrote most of his memoirs because his writing style is very recognizable in his writing. It is one of the best memoirs that I have ever read.

Started out slow during the childhood years but after that, I couldn't put the book down. I was truly amazed by his openness. Just LBJ, the media focused more of the negatives of their presidencies instead of both of their accomplishments.

Since there are already 700 reviews, I'll keep mine short ;)

My life talks about the life of Bill Clinton, one of the more outspoken US presidents. As expected, it starts when he was born. The earlier years are gone over quite quickly and most of the book is about his time as president.

I've enjoyed "my life". Most of the things in the book are already public information and therefore I felt that the book didn't give me the extra insight and info that I was expecting. When you've followed Bill Clinton a little, then you'll find it a good summary of the info you already knew :)

One addition. The book does have a strong anti-republican political message. I do not mind it at all, but sometimes it felt more like a democratic attempt making republicans look bad than a biography. I do not know whether that was intended.

Worth reading, nothing shockingly new though.

"I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come." -with these words referring to how that encounter with President Kennedy affected him, William Jefferson Clinton starts the exposition on his life's work.

The books reads like a diary from Clinton's boyhood to right after leaving office, having served the maximum term for a US President. Clinton's recall of past friends/acquaintances is quite photographic - it seems he already knew that he would become important enough to publish his own memoir and needed to remember names.

Quite interesting is his evolving campaign strategies that took him from attorney general to Arkansas governor and eventually to President. In this field, Clinton has no peer. In fact, he frets more about his political mistakes like the car plate tax that cost him reelection as a governor, than his personal failings(the Lewinsky affair was treated more as a political failing than a personal one). Much vitrole is of course reserved for Ken Starr - the independent prosecutor whose appointment he approved to his deep regret.

All in all, the book is saved by its subject as it tends to drone towards the end. The reader has to labor just to get a few morsels of information but it's worth the effort. His insights on his successor proved to be prescient. Also pertinent are his thoughts on "Black Hawk Down" in Mogandishu, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Bush vs Gore.

In the end, people would want to know what the first Baby Boomer president thinks and stays with him till the end of his story.

Suspenseful...typical Patterson mystery to the end. President Clinton’s input very evident throughout.

You can read many books on american politics but none as real as it is stated on this magnificent book .What it means to be democrat or republican . What do they stand for . The bargaining between these two parties . How strongly each party member upholds the stand of the party even to the point that will go against the people's benefits . Their believes on government spending which many of them do not make any sense : spend because.....you have to spend . The inside and unseen strugles of power between parties , just for the sake of power .The importance to maintain this power in the Supreme Court . The way Congress upholds or denies the President's good faith requests , just as a game of who is who. On reading this book , sometimes you can sense a feeling of despair and frustration on behalve of the President Hilton because of the tenacious fight that he encountered on the Congress , sometimes without a sound or meaningful response : thinking by the people or for the people . It seems that there are other primary interests . In conclusion , a first hand and a great outlook of how politics is being played between The President and Congress .
Well written. However,I wish he had been more revealing of his inner thoughts and feelings,as well as the status of his struggles with his demons. But,perhaps it is too early for that.
