by Kiley, Deborah Scaling. ALBATROSS is the gripping story of what was supposed to be a routine cruise from Maine to Florida to deliver the TRASHMAN to its owner. It's a story of struggle, death and survival. 4. Seller: Ergodebooks.

The knockout story of Deborah Kiley's five days and nights on a raft in heavy seas during a storm. Aided by journalist Noonan, she spins a harrowing tale. In 1982, 24-year-old Kiley, who had already sailed the Whitbred and other famous sailboat endurance races, fell in with John Lippoth, captain of the Trashman, a heavy-handling, 58-foot yacht he was sailing from Maine to Florida. The Trashman set sail with Debbie and John; his girlfriend Meg Mooney; tall, muscular Brad Cavanaugh and his buddy Mark Adams, a Brit with pale blue malamute eyes and a stupefyingly evil tongue. The Woman Whose Survival Inspired a Shark Week Movie Lived a Truly Incredible Life.

The Woman Whose Survival Inspired a Shark Week Movie Lived a Truly Incredible Life. She became a motivational speaker and wrote a book about surviving in 1984 called Albatross: The True Story of a Woman's Survival at Sea. "I never wanted to write it," Deborah said in a 1994 interview with South Florida's Sun Sentinel. I mean, why dredge up memories? And how could I take money?

A tale of shipwreck and survival recounts the experiences of five people adrift in a dinghy and surrounded by sharks as they wait to be rescued

A good read and a quick one too. The writing flows and events quickly chase one another from one page to the next. A true tragedy however, like so many, man made by poor decision making. The Captain appeared to this reader to be a drunk who also behaved irresponsibly. He also accepted a crew member on board, Mark Adams, who was either insane or disturbed but either way, a real piece of work who ended up with the sharks. Ms. Kiley who survived this awful incident along with another crew member was clearly extraordinarily skilled at such a tender age. Her navigational and nautical experience and skills were commendable. A strong young woman to be admired with a warning to all others. The ocean and all sailing adventures are not to be taken lightly. A real shame Ms. Kiley is now deceased.

Compelling story, about how the macho world of sailing killed three people and stranded two others. I wish it had been written better, and it's not where you want to go to renew your faith in humankind. The people who died range from pathetic to despicable, at least in the narrator's presentation of them. But it did cure me of any desire for a yacht.
Lilegha
This book had me riveted. I looked up the author and saw that she died fairly young. Never a happy person but she sure could tell a story.

Loved this book. Although I knew how it ended, I was still on the edge of my seat reading this. Couldn't put it down.

This was a book I listened to on tape years ago but had to get a copy and read it. The woman in this book was 22 at the time, very young to go through this kind of trauma. We know by her comments as she got older the incidents affected her life and stayed with her. For those with a spiritual side, it was very disturbing how some in the group remained hostile towards one another. This is an excellent read.
