John Glatt writes really psychologically detailed True Crime books and this book was exceptional in that way. Jonathan Nyce was not a nice man though he did his best to portray himself as loving and caring, especially as a father to his three children. There are typos and some inconsistencies in the details presented by the author, but these are probably "picky" criticisms on my part. I had not read John Glatt prior to this book, but I don't think I'll be seeking out other books of his.

Blind Passion by John Glatt is fun to read. This book is about Julie, but it starts out with the life of Julia, her mother. By the time you get to Julie, you can see what makes her tick and why she would run off for a romantic adventure in a foreign country

Blind Passion by John Glatt is fun to read. By the time you get to Julie, you can see what makes her tick and why she would run off for a romantic adventure in a foreign country. She leaves behind a life with a husband who worked his way up, and a 3 year old daughter. I agree with the boyfriend's mother in Greece, who voices the traditional Greek idea that a mother who abandons her child to live with a man is beneath contempt

i really love true crime.

the victim was a very high energy type of person, a part-time bikini model who also worked full-time for her husband's landscaping business setting up appointments and billing. they made a lot of money, led a very affluent life and were happy. she came from a poor family. her mother was an alcoholic.

however, she gained some weight during a pregnancy and was depressed afterward. she was abusing cocaine somewhat. she lost most of the weight, but was just not very happy. her life and marriage were not as fulfilling as before.

on a cruise, she met a younger greek man who did pretty menial work on the ship. it's hard to understand her attraction to him. he wasn't particularly good looking, had no money, and no real prospects, although he spoke as if he had a big future ahead.

they developed a long-distance relationship that then became an affair, and she filed for divorce. if she had not been struggling with depression and looking for something to make her happier, i doubt that she would have noticed him. he expressed a lot of attraction and interest in her.

once her divorce was final, she went to greece with a large amount of money to live there, meet his family and marry him. she really did not know what she was getting into. she did not know greece or its culture, nor did she have any realistic idea of what their lives would be like together. plus, her ex was not going to let her take their child to live in greece where he would not be able to have a relationship with his daughter, and she wasn't going to live separated from her daughter. she just didn't work out in her mind and in her relationship how to live close to her daughter.

when she and her boyfriend realized that their relationship wasn't going to work, he suddenly killed her. the murder was sudden and shocking, resulting in a huge amount of press in greece. as you read this story, it is shocking how quickly and suddenly he chose to kill her, and how the course of her life ended up as it did.

The waste of this woman's (she never became a 'woman') intelligence is probably a greater crime than what happened to her head.

Her physical beauty was her fatal flaw because she became dependent upon it, like her mother did with speed and beer. There is a certain justice in people who exploit their inherited, highly sought-after physiognomy to get what they want, leaving their other inherited traits to rot. What an enormous waste.

I found could elicit no empathy for her or her mother both exhibiting No self-discipline, to the point of self-destruction

Outrageous behavior on both their parts, and with Julie, so unnecessary her wanton, thrill seeking misbehavior that abandpned her child to run off with a sailor. Where on earth was her sense of fairness to her offspring after seeing what her own mother did to her two children?? She had the memory and brains to assess what was done to her, and instead of rectifying it in her own life, she adopted it.

Like the efficient writing and no padding of details by iteration.

This is the sad and pathetic story of a beautiful, fun loving, young woman, wife, and mother, who went away with her husband on a cruise ship and met the man with whom she would have an affair and for whom she would divorce her husband. Little did she know that her affair would end in her murder at her lover's hands.
Julie Scully seemed to have everything a woman would want. She had a doting husband, a beautiful home, enough money to spend as she pleased, a beautiful daughter, and many friends. She was also beautiful and a popular swimsuit model for a local New Jersey newspaper. A reader's favorite, Julie loved being a minor celebrity.
After the birth of her daughter, Katie, this vivacious party girl suffered from post-partum depression. Her marriage on the rocks, she turned to cocaine. In an effort to save her marriage, however, she suggested that she and her husband, Tim, take a Caribbean cruise together. It was aboard that cruise ship that Julie would meet George Skiadopoulos, a not particularly attractive Greek sailor six years her junior. Their mutual attraction would set Julie on the path to perdition.
Julie began an affair with George while still married. Cuckolding Tim, Julie carried on a trans-Atlantic love affair with George that would see her eventually divorce Tim. She and George planned to get married and, leaving three year old Katie behind with Tim, Julie moved to Greece to be with her lover and, with the large cash settlement from her divorce, hoped to marry and live happily ever after with him.
Unfortunately for her, there would be no happy ending, as there were things about George that she did not know. By the time she realized that he had some serious issues, it was too late, as death was already knocking at her door. This shallow, self absorbed woman would meet an unenviable and gruesome death.

This is a well written and fairly absorbing true crime novel. It focuses on the dynamics of Julie's relationships but lacks some depth, mainly because the emotionally immature victim seemed to be so one dimensional. Readers may feel sorry for Julie in the abstract but do not come away feeling that they knew what made her tick. She is an enigma in death, as she was in life. This is the one weakness of the book. Still, true crime fans should find this book to be a worthwhile read.

I could not put this book down. I couldn't help myself - took it to the dinner table, to the bathroom, to bed at night, to medical office waiting rooms, etc.- any time when I might have the opportuinity to read a few pages. The story moved along with necessary detail yet was never bogged down in boring information. Although I knew the outcome from the picture captions, the details of the life of Julie and her family kept it intriging but sad as the deterioration was obvious from the beginning. John Glatt is absolutely one of the best writers of true crime and his accounts are well documented, told with candor but with compassion for all involved. Also, it is important that photos are included in the Kindle edition as they were in this case. I highly recommend this book.
