Swift Summer
If you attend standards meetings - they zig-zag, meander and bend your mind and numb your brain - without being useful. This book has the same feel. And yet everything else on the market is even worse. There is a real opportunity here for someone to come in and write a book that is worth reading. In the meantime, if you can't bear to read standards and you have to read something - this is it.

If you are interested in the core principles of DS spread spectrum applied to cellular then read Viterbi's book. Simple and elegant - if a bit dated. It doesn't have the coherent uplink innovations and all the EVDO/ HSPA (multiuser diversity, MIMO etc.) - but if you use the first principles approach of the book, you will pick up all of these on your own. And then if you need to know the details and the hairly UMTS names (PCCPCH etc.) - you can read this junk.

Full of misconceptions and incorrect math. These guys don't have a clue as to how the carriers are built, how link budgets are calculated or how digital communications work. Don't throw your money away on this sophist explanation of communications.
AGAD
Explains basic concepts of WCMDA well. Little on underlying theory of wireless. Rather, it describes essentially all elements of this enormously complex system specification. The exposition is clear and reasonable easy to follow. I have noticed very few errors.
Fog
This is one of the best organized and illustrated technical books on universal mobile telecommunications system - UMTS. It explains how this WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE system is packet based and is significantly different than its GSM and GPRS predecessors. There are good descriptions of key network elements including Node B (base stations), radio network controllers - RNC, subscriber databases - HLR and VLR, circuit switched gateways - GMSC, packet switched gateways/service nodes - GGSN. The book explains the physical and logical channel structures, their operation, and their relationships with each other (there are many channel configuration options). If you need a good technical understanding of WCDMA/UMTS, HSPA, and LTE radio access technology and system elements, this is a great book.
