Beautiful photography guides the eye through examples of authentic colonial architecture in Pennsylvania. Introduction by R. Brognard Okie. The book was one of the first systematic inventories of vernacular American architecture and defined Raymond’s long and successful career. A ground-breaking work when first published in 1931, this classic book is now released in soft cover. Eleanor Raymond amassed more than 50 years of professional experience in the practice of architecture and in 1961 was made a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. 1 Early life and education. In 1931, after five years of work, Raymond published Early Domestic Architecture of Pennsylvania, in which she explored what she called the unstudied directness in fitting form to function of very early American architecture. The book was one of the first systematic inventories of vernacular American architecture and defined Raymond’s career.

There have been a number of books published illustrating the early buildings in Pennsylvania. The authors of these books have not thought it worthwhile to show the smaller or more primitive houses or the barns and out-buildings that are so typical of Eastern Pennsylvania in particular, and that add so much to the attractiveness of the countryside. It should be rather humiliating to some of us who are so fond of the simple type of buildings but have done nothing to make a lasting record of them, that Miss Raymond (a Boston Architect) has stolen a march on us by putting in book form a record of interior and exterior views, not only of the smaller houses but of barns, mills, spring houses and other out-buildings which are fast disappearing from our countryside. Miss Raymond has done a real service in making a permanent record of these fine old buildings in such an instructive and interesting way. It is to be hoped that she has derived a proportion at least of the pleasure in her work the illustrations will give to others.

The Classic on Southeast PA Farmhouses, Barns, Out-Buildings, Details, Etc!
Ms. Raymond documented these structures before historic preservation as in "vogue" and these buildings were "restored" (botched-Warrenpoint the most recent causality).
A tremendous wealth in capturing these buildings and elements as they were.
Love this Book! (Fortunate to also have copy #309 from the 1100 books of the first printing in 1931)

Great book for historic architectural research - have used it for years and sent copies to colleagues and friends and clients. Eleanor Raymond was a pioneering woman architect - did work with passive solar design as well as historic preservation.
