The History of Pirates by Angus Konstam (2002). Angus Konstam takes us through a general history of piracy on the seas, from the ancient raiders of Babylonia and Greece to the modern-day guerillas in speedboats armed with AK-47 assault rifles in the south China Sea. While particularly focused to the Golden Age, he reminds us that piracy on the high seas existed long before names like Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, and Bartholomew Roberts struck terror into the hearts of sailors and merchants - Julius Caesar was captured by pirates - and it remains a major problem in the modern world

Angus Konstam's HISTORY OF PIRATES uses works from the Mariners' Museum in Virginia to provide a powerful visual impact. Piracy from ancient to modern times is surveyed in a series of maps, images, and discussions that cover specific events, regions, and pirates. Plenty of historical and political background to the events place each in perspective and provide an excellent survey of mariner events of the times. However, this is a high quality overview of the history of pirates from earliest recorded times onward.

When I ordered this book, on the condition listing it was stated as "new" . But it should had been stated under "used" there is a very large dent and rip on the corner cover of this softcover book, which is very saddening as I wanted to give this as a gift. Although it was only $15, I never wanted a damaged book. I was expect new as it was stated, with no damages. Very unsatisfied...

The History of Pirates, by Angus Knostam with introduction by David Cordingly, is a honest, straight forward, history about the pirates of the world, starting with the Greeks and Sea People, showing us the great pirates of history, and ending in the South China Sea. The Barbary Pirates, the Privateers of Elizabeth, the Buccaneers of the Spanish Main, Blackbeard, Bartholomew Roberts and even the pirates of the Far East. Nobody and no time period is left untouched.
The author shows us all cruel and ruthless many of the pirates were but also shows that many were not just pirates. One nation's pirate is another nation's hero or soldier. The legends and myths have to be pushed aside to show the facts and real people that rovered the seven seas, fighting for King, God and gold. Even has a chapter on the pirate code.
A must for any collection dealing with Pirates, general world history or naval history.

"History of Pirates" serves as an excellent introduction to pirates. The book contains several maps and brief biographies of several pirates, including Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet, and others.

The narrative is easy to read and flows smoothly. If you are looking for a good introduction to pirates, then this book is the one. However, since the biographies are brief, I suggest you go to other pirate books for more detailed histories.

Recommended.

Great book to use as an overall general resource, although, the problem with the book is that Konstam does not include any citations within the book. This would have been an excellent scholarly source, however, the primary source requirements just do not fit. Still, I did very much enjoy reading through the book, it is a great overview of piracy as a whole with brief biographies about the most famous pirates and places.
This is the top of the line and a good value at $19.95. Other books you ought to consider are Pirates: Predators of the Sea, which combines similar and great photos with slightly move advanced text. For 17 year olds and up, try If a Pirate I Must Be which is a thumping good read with fascinating details about what it was like to be a pirate.
