I actually liked reading Castle by Christopher Gravett since it helped give me some background knowledge on the book i'm currently reading Once and Future King. The best parts and most interesting parts to me are when it talks about animals and different workers and their jobs around the castle. I thought it was crazy that all the weird animals had a function of some sort. They are so similar to people which is a comparison I never thought i'd make. Readers explore the first earth-and-timber castles, take part in a siege, watch the community of lords and ladies, jesters, pages going about their daily lives - even peek into the Great Hall and deep down into the dungeons.

I got this for my son when he was almost 6 and of course he didn't pay much attention, the illustrations being in black and white and the text being so instructive, however, this book got ME totally absorbed! Illustrations and explanations are very interesting, it's a fantastic book. Now that my son is 8 it's time to put it back to his library, he'll appreciate it now.

First of the series that I read, I love the series

It covers a wide range of items involving life in a castle, but because of its scattered approach, the information tends to get watered down. I picked it up specifically to learn about the structure and construction of castles and while this information was present, bit wasn't as detailed as I would have liked.

The four books: Pyramid, Mill, City and Castle. I learned a lot about line drawing as a kid from these books. I copied his style and made my own subject matter, usually medieval towns. Inspiring and to be honest I'm not that into his full color ones from later years.

A great old book I read as a kid and all libraries public and private should have at least one copy on the bookshelf.

Been wanting this for a good number of years. Read when when I was a kid; loved it then, love it now. A must have gift for any child with imagination. Th animated documentary of this book sparked a life long love of castles and medieval history when I was 8.
The quality of these drawings attests to his highly developed skills.
