Feelings by Aliki Brandenberg is a Reading Rainbow book about feelings that children experience. It focuses both on feelings and on empathy toward what others are feeling. The text is in varying fonts, some of them rather small. Along with the illustrations, it shows what children are thinking, both the child being focused on and those around him or her. Text is supplied showing what the watching birds are thinking and saying to each other. The illustrations really carry this book. "Children often have difficulty articulating emotions. That fact is the underpinning for Aliki's catalog of feelings, be they happy, sad, or somewhere in between."--Booklist. "A delightful book."--New York Times Book Review.

Our two girls love this book. It's like nothing else they have, there's no real story just a series of vignettes showing kids wrestling with their feelings of anger, boredom, envy and all the other storms the seem to swell up in pre-schoolers' hearts.

The messages about understanding and controlling your feelings are subtle but clear enough for even 5 year olds to get them.

It's a cute book with a good message and worth picking up.

Yes, the kids in this book express actual feelings: Jealousy, sadness, rage, impatience. They feel them, they acknowledge them, the little birds comment on them. This isn't a book of simple feelings "happy, sad, angry, scared." This is a book of very real, nuanced human feelings and even if we *wish* we didn't have them (or our kids didn't), it seems like most of us do. While the feelings are a bit nuanced, the book is very clear and simple. I can see where people may think it's a great book for little kids (and it probably is), but I read it with my older kids (9&12), or they look at it themselves, and it's a great acknowledgement of real feelings as well as a great discussion starter. We really love this book, but if you are looking for something more clear-cut as an entry point to feelings language, you may want to start with another book (like Todd Parr books or some of the intro feelings book (search feelings and autism and you get a lot of facial recognition books)). And we like those books, too! But this one is just more advanced.

It’s hard to compete with iPads, etc, but this book grabs everyone’s attention.
This was one of my favorite books to enjoy alone or with my sister when growing up in the 90’s. It teaches compassion, manners and for kids who are too young to know how to read, there are beautifully illustrated segments that they can understand”read” just seeing the emotion and situations the characters are going through. I’ve purchased this book twice and I know that I will buy it again for the kids in my family because of its life lessons and it teaches kids the true value of being kind to others. ????

Read this years ago to my own kids, and I thought it would be a great book for my grand niece just starting her school experiences in kindergarten. In addition to Aliki's beautiful illustrations, the book gives the most credible exposition of the landmine of new feelings kids encounter at the tender ages of 4, 5, 6 and how to understand them and navigate them. I found that as I read each page, my niece had something really interesting to share about her own experiences, her eyes big and bright as she spoke in a completely animated and interesting way. This made reading the book so much cooler. I left my visit knowing this would be a favorite.

I got this for a 3 year old but I think it's too sophisticated

Hard to read to young child. Confusing

Both my kids love this book (ages 5 and 3) but I think it would be great for much older kids, too. It's just funny and perfect--it's just right. Instant classic.
Awesome book. Some parts are hard to read and the typeface can be too small, but great for learning about feelings
