My daughter loves this series.

My second grader seems to like it well enough but it's a product of a particular mindset that presents very confusing messages to kids. This would not have passed muster with my parents. The books seem to be designed for girls primarily and presents an odd, effeminate boy who lacks male friends and interests. I think this mirrors the author's own life. The books are also fairly uninteresting, meandering tales. It's pretty sad that schools push this series.
