Set in Edwardian England 'The Workhouse Child' is a traditional, but lively and entertaining story which I first read as a child in the 1970s, and although it wasn't one of my all-time favourite children's books, it was much enjoyed at the time.

Set in Edwardian England 'The Workhouse Child' is a traditional, but lively and entertaining story which I first read as a child in the 1970s, and although it wasn't one of my all-time favourite children's books, it was much enjoyed at the time. Of course, reading it as an adult means suspending one's disbelief more than would be necessary if one were reading it as a child, but I still found this an enjoyably nostalgic and entertaining read.
