Noah Thomas Porter III (December 14, 1811 – March 4, 1892) was an American academic, philosopher, author, lexicographer and an outspoken anti-slavery activist. Porter Mountain, of the Adirondack Mountains, was named for him after he was the first to climb it in 1875. He was President of Yale College (1871–1886).

Noah Porter-Benson is the biological son of the late Ellie Porter and the late Johnny Drake. His adoptive mother is Olivia Benson. Noah was first played by twins Bradley and Skyler Dubow (mostly by Bradley), then by Jack Nawada-Braunwart and now by Ryan Buggle. Ellie gave birth to Noah while working for Little Tino, who let her keep the baby as long as she kept working. When she accidentally overdosed, Tino sold Noah to a child pornography producer couple.

Mary Porter was a vampire who turned Rose into a vampire back in the 15th century. In the present time, she lived in a house which Damon referred to as a "vampire hoarder" in Kansas. She belongs to the same bloodline as Katherine, Stefan, Damon, Abby, Caroline and Elena.

He was a frequent visitor to the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and in 1875 was among the first recorded to make an ascent of the peak later named Porter Mountain in his honor.
