"It's snowing, said boy with dog."It's only a snowflake," said grandfather with beard. No one thinks one or two snowflakes will amount to anything. Not the man with the hat or the lady with the umbrella. Not even the television or the radio forecasters. But one boy and his dog have faith that the snow will amount to something spectacular, and when flakes start to swirl down on the city, they are also the only ones who know how to truly enjoy it. This playful depiction of a snowy day and the transformation of a city is perfectly captured in simple, poetic text and lively watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations. Snow is a 1998 New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year and a 1999 Caldecott Honor Book.
Bought this book purely for the illustrations. About 40 years ago, I'd run across and bought (even though I really couldn't afford to buy books then, gave up eating for a week to buy the book) his Dawn book because it was so beautiful. I still have it and look at it every so often when I need serenity and inspiration. I love the illustrations in this book too. They're simple in their complexity, complex in their simplicity? You don't really need to read the limited text either, the pictures tell the story (and it's also fun to make up your own story based on the pictures). It's a beautiful book and I don't even remember now being a child (that's how old I am).
It's so easy
I have love love loved reading this book to my 1-2 year old. He just loves it. It's wonderful in it's simplicity for a child learning language and also for it's beautiful illustrations. He never tires of it either. I have since read him other Uri Shulevitz books and they are wonderful too.
This isn't your classic literary beacon. Instead it is a whimsical picture book through which the story is told by the delightful illustrations perhaps even more than words. I bought this for a preschooldirector who loved it. Whimsical, fun and the world of snow adults said wouldn't last through the eyes of a child. This book will be in my library forever.
Lovely artwork and short sentences make this a great book for beginning readers. There is a charm to the broken English style of sentence construction that makes it an exotic look at a word which hovers on the fantastical with each flake that falls. Lyrical and haunting images and quirky faces and come-to-life fairytale creatures at the end provides a charming tale of the power of a child to see the possible when you dream for a snow storm.
I am a preschool teacher and have loved reading this story to my students, especially during the first big snow of the year. The paintings are simple and interesting, as is the story itself. Audio books are great for switching things up a bit during storytime, and they are also ways for the students to experience the stories themselves at a reading center. I have found this particular story's audio reading to be very calming for my students - the reading by Sean Schemmel is very pleasant and quiet, as is the background music, complimenting the feel of softly falling snow covering the gray city in a blanket of white. A great purchase for a classroom or family library.
Spectacular and breathtaking illustrations. The white snow on swirling gray skies is fitting mood for the feel of snow. Students appreciate that the boy KNOWS it will snow and the adults don't believe him. And the boy, of course, is proven correct. Spectacular, spectacular, spectacular.
Review of board book version.....While this book is wonderfully simple. It is well illustrated and is a very good book for expanding a child's imagination it is too small. It is OK if it is only one child, but if you are reading to a few children or a group it is too small. I know board books are for children to read themselves but they are getting so small that they are only good for one child at a time. The book measures 5-1/2 by 6 inches
This is one of my favorite winter children's books. It's really sweet. Bought as a gift. I think they will like it.
