"The author believes that the plenary inspiration of the autographs of the New Testament is the only logical view that can be held by those who accept the true deity as well as the perfect humanity of Christ. Once owned it and wanted it again. Good, sound Evangelical scholarship.

E. F. Harrison was one of the original four faculty members of Fuller Theological Seminary. He admirally treats the traditional aspects of NT Intro and begins with the historical setting from the end of the exile to Roman rule. He is almost always on the side of the traditional dates for the composition of the NT books. He treats textual matters even-handedly. All in all a quite reliable Introduction.

For the lay Christian, a New Testament Introduction work may be challenging; especially when compared to New Testament Survey's, wherein they address less technical, scholarly issues. However, among the aforementioned technical aspects, there is also much useful, rich, practical background information to be had within the pages of an "Introduction".

Unfortunately, much of the professing church currently suffers from an anti-intellectual affliction which is highly hazardous and must be resisted fervently. Thus it's important for lay Christians to have one or two solid N.T. Introductions at their disposal. However, for those ready to drink from the more technical and advanced waters, many of the best Introductions are like drinking from a fire hose set at full pressure. The gold standard is Donald Guthrie's, "New Testament Introduction"; this work is a serious tome of academia. Also among the best is D. A. Carson & Douglas Moo's "An Introduction to the New Testament"; it too is quite robust and quite weighty (literally). Both of these works are profound; however, I wouldn't recommend them for the unfamiliar lay Christian.

In comes Harrison's masterful New Testament introduction. It's academically rigorous and yet intellectually manageable (like drinking from a large garden hose) without being too sparse or having the content dumbed-down; it is widely acknowledged as first-rate scholarship. His work is a tremendous gift to the church and a perfect starter Introduction for the lay Christian.
Often cited, liberal, comprehensive, no-nonsense New Testament Introduction. It's a must have, and if they don't reprint it, get it while supplies last! It's hard to follow the argument at times and you will need either a decent NT Greek reading ability or an interlinear. If you are sick of apologetics when you turn to books in your library and want to read something honest crack this one open.
