PROPHECY IN ANCIENT ISRAEL by Johannes Lindblom (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1962/1973) is the culmination of nearly forty years of study in the field of Old Testament prophecy and is a veritable treasure trove concerning the gift of prophecy as seen in ancient Israel and beyond. The Bible allows us to trace the history of prophecy in ancient Israel. Not counting Moses, the earliest prophets described in the Bible were seers, charismatic figures who prophesied in a trance, usually induced by the use of music and dance. Often they banded together in guilds and were called "the sons of the prophets. As Judaism developed, the books of the prophets shaped many other aspects of the tradition, most especially the concept of the messianic era, which was rooted in the world of the prophets. Later on, Jewish mysticism took its cue from the prophetic visions of Isaiah and Ezekiel.

Author J. Lindblom delivers a masterful and authoritative work on the prophetic movement as a whole, and demonstrates his thesis that prophecy was not unique to ancient Israel, but may be found in a variety of cultures at different stages of religious development. Israelite prophecy (both earlier and later, classical prophecy) is, however, used as a central focal point for examination of certain characteristic psychological features that give a reference for determining commonalities. In his review of this book in The Christian Century, James Muilenberg opined, "One may well afford to do without many other books in order to secure this one," and quoted Professor T.H. Robinson, who praised the book as "probably the best and most comprehensive book on the Old Testament prophecy that has appeared in English."
