This is not faithful to the original book.
This is hardly Butler's work at all - this text has been raped clean of all the author's intent, and is filled with sophistries and outright lies. It's really a few orthodox versions. This is not faithful to the original book.

Butler's four volumes on the saints are the classic work in this field. If you hope to wallow in saccharine syrup and pious platitudes, look elsewhere. There are tales in this work, revised by a modern Jesuit scholar, that make it look like precis of some rather racy old French novels.

Butler’s distinctive contribution to stories about saints was to turn attention away from the superhuman, miraculous themes that are prevalent in earlier works. He gives us saints who are examples of Christian living and provide inspiration for the living of our own lives, in every time and circumstance. They were once what we are now, travelers on earth. They had the same weaknesses we have. Alban Butler declared, The saints are a ‘cloud of witnesses over our head,’ showing us that a life of Christian perfection is not impossible. The perfection they show us is far from being spotless or insulated from real life. When we realize this, we will see the possibilities for ourselves.
The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints. Compiled from Original Monuments and Authentic Records. While these 1,458 entries are composed from a distinctly 18th-century Catholic perspective, Alban’s syntheses of multitudinous histories result in an enlightenment of the ecclesiastical side of Western cultural development, with particular emphasis on the early Christian era. The book, first published in the nineteenth Father Butler's Lives of the Saints is an amazing book of devotion, arranged to follow the Catholic Church's calendar of feast days, and so is relevant every day of the year. I enjoyed reading and learning about the daily saints, Doctors, and martyrs of the Church in concise, well-written, prose.
