Most Christians don’t make golden idols like the Israelites in the wilderness, but we do set up idols on our own desert road―idols like substance abuse, pornography, gluttony, and rage. And even those who don’t know the pain of actual slavery can feel enslaved to the fear and shame that follow sexual abuse or betrayal by a spouse, for we suffer at the hands of our idols as well as those created by others. We need more than self-improvement or comfort―we need redemption.

I haven't even finished reading this book, yet, and I can honestly say that it has changed my life. Before, I understood in my head that there is the "old man" and the "new man". The new man which Christ has redeemed and made new by his blood. The old man is the one enslaved to sin and bound to death. Yet I realized while reading this book that I had been seeing any good that I had done as something Christ had done in me and any bad that I had done as something that was a normal thing - something that is typical of me as a sinner. I still considered myself the "old man". Every time I did I diminished Christ's work on the cross since this is a work He has already accomplished. It is finished. He has put death to death and brings us to life and so now sinning is the abnormal thing. There is nothing more for me to add and nothing more for me to do. What more can I say or do that would bring me closer to deserving God when every breath is given by him and every gift of my hands and opportunity created from him? Yet this was what I did. I know, now, that I am new. This is not just something I can say to others because I know it in my head. I can say it because I know it in my heart to be true. I know on this side of heaven I will never be rid of sin but at least now I know that I am not defined by sin but by Christ who has justified me and all those who believe by His work on the cross and resurrection. It has brought other things to light, as well. It has brought me to forgive people I never knew I needed to forgive and brought close friends of mine who are also reading it to see how hurt they have been over past wrongs and how deeply they have been affected. I would have given this book more stars but it wasn't an option.

The book that truly changed my life and explained that I could have peace through the grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ! The first few chapters explained God's great love for me. I read the few chapters three times the first day, the whole book twice in the first week and I still go back and read it every six months or so. The teaching, which is truly biblical based explains the grace of Jesus Christ and his forgiveness of our sins and how our addictions are worship of false idols which can be broken through faith in Jesus Christ. I would HIGHLY recommend it for anyone who grew up in a legalistic, rule based belief system, whether protestant, catholic, amish, mormon, cult, etc, that denied the grace of Jesus Christ and placed emphasis on continuing to strive to good enough to "earn" God's acceptance. Salvation is a gift of God through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works, lest any man should boast. Like many, I had sat through church my whole life, but never had a true understanding of God's great love for me, that he would send his son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to redeem me. After reading the book my foundation belief in Jesus Christ was changed as I accepted him as my Lord and Savior. The book provides EXCELLENT biblical teaching and counselor examples that everyone can relate to. It even has a highly needed, but never discussed chapter on religious addiction. All in need of the grace of Jesus Christ.

This book looks at the big picture of God's redemption of His children from bondage Egypt. It does a great job at keeping the big purpose in mind and looking at reasons the Israelites returned again and again to sin. This book also has a story from a different person in each chapter that helps illustrate the topic of the chapter and make it more relatable.

I read this book once on my own and then went through it a chapter a week with a men's group at my church. It is a great book for spawning discussion. There are questions at the end of each chapter and they are good, but I think using them to get a better idea of the purpose of the chapter and writing questions that fit my group tended to work better.

I would recommend this book for anyone seeking to see God work in their life. Don't make it all about you though...
