I have just read half of the book, but it provides looks into the sequence of events during which the "moderate" Southern Baptists attempted to comprehend, and then to resist the take-over of the fundamentalists, beginning in 1978, and pretty much ceasing in the late 1980s. It is one side of the controversy, but it is written with pathos and meticulous detail.

Walter Shurden is a longtime champion of the role of freedom in the Baptist tradition. Recognizing that freedom alone does not tell the whole story, Shurden also speaks to and from other cardinal Baptist convictions. Some of the materials in this volume appear for the first time and consist of speeches and addresses that Shurden has made at crucial points in recent Baptist life in America in the latter part of the twentieth century.

The History of the Associated Baptist Press, Shurden, Walter B. Prior to the founding of the Associated Baptist Press, a number of issues, including the publication of Professor Ralph Elliot’s The Message of Genesis (which argued that Genesis 1–11 was mythological literature) caused controversy in the Southern Baptist denomination.

The Struggle for the Soul of the SBC, by Walter Shurden, p. 36) So yes, still a bad quote, but not as bad as it appears out of context. 3) The quote also appears out of context in Bruce Gourley’s book, The Godmakers: A Legacy of the Southern Baptist Convention (Franklin, TN: Providence House, 1996, p. 75), but Gourley is simply citing Sherman and his reported conversation with Rogers. Adrian Rogers, fundamentalist pastor and past SBC president, recently revealed his racist beliefs when asked about slavery: & I believe slavery is a much-maligned institution. If we had slavery today, we would not have this welfare mess' (p. 75).

This book is a very good telling of the fundamentalist hijacking of the Southern Baptist Convention from the moderates side. Really a very disturbing book full of devious and scheming leaders of the convention, some whom people wouldn't even think could be that mean.
