Welcome to Sams Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 21 Days. Over the next three weeks, you will learn how to build a wide variety of applications with Microsoft's Visual C++. What's even better is that you will learn how to create these types of applications by actually building them yourself. As you read this book, you will be gaining actual programming experience using Visual C++. So let's get started!

This product contains:Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days, Fourth Edition provides a straight-forward tutorial approach to programming in C++. It assumes no prior knowledge of programming and offers both solid instruction and the authors insights into best programming and learning practices. The book also provides a foundation for understanding object-oriented programming.ANSI-Compliant C++ CompilerCompiler Installation Booklet

Like most of the 21 Day books, this one does a good job taking the reader through the basic aspects of its subject matter. The book says it's written for novice programmers-- I'd take that with a grain of salt. If you haven't programmed before, C# can be a difficult place to start, and this book won't really make it much easier. But if you have had experience with VBA in Excel or other programs, or if you are in an experienced VB programmer, this book will ease you into C# without undue difficulty. Lots of quizzes and exercises, so you can check your progress as you go along and apply what you are learning. Only one chapter on the .Net Framework, and only one on Web programming, but these topics are dense enough that you would probably want a separate book on each topic. So, one can't really fault Jones for only touvhing lightly here. Two chapters on WinForms and Windows applications, with the rest of the text focused mainly on console apps to demonstrate the language.
This is an excellent book to introduce you to one of the finest languages available. While learning C++ is a daunting task, this book makes a good attempt at making it as painless as possible. However, do not expect to master the content of this book in the traditional '21' days. Some things need to absorbed rather than glanced at, and in my case, that may mean re-re-re-re-reading somethings. The only real criticism I have is the lack of depth of the example code. Although, this is an introduction into C++ and it may be just the ticket to bring home the important elements needed to pick up a more advanced tome. ****** NOTE ****** You need to actually TYPE in the code and COMPILE it to really take advantage of ANY programming book. This should be a given. Don't just whine because you didn't learn the basics and then choke on pointers.
I bought this book to learn C++, coming from a C programming background. The first week gives you the foundation for many "bracket" languages (C, C++, Java, C#). If you already know some C, it's a good review of the basics of C++. From that point, you move into object-oriented programming (OOP), and while the subject matter does get harder, the book does not. The explanations of sometimes complicated concepts are clear and are usually provided with a complete-program example (not just one or two lines of a code snippet). Even after reading this book cover-to-cover, I find that I now use it as a reference material quite often. Since reading this book, I've gone on to learn Java and C#, and *MANY* of the concepts I learned from this book could be directly applied in those languages (and probably many more languages, as well). While this is not the only book you'll ever need to be a good programmer, it's a great place to start.
Being an introductory book on such a big programming language as C++, it would be naive to expect an in-depth coverage within its scope. And yes, it has little flaws here and there like most academic books. I used a different text written for beginners but at the end of it I didn't feel quite as confident in pursuing more challenging reading as when I finished this one. This text offers a clear and easy-to-understand exposure of the language's basic topics, which are exemplified by the use of short code in order that the student can quickly grasp the concept and move on.

If you are a novice to C++ and looking for a solid basis for further and more in-depth reading on this rather challenging language, I strongly recommend this text as your first contact with it, always keeping in mind though that there is always more to be learnt from other sources. It did work for me and I bet it will work for you!!
I came to this book with some knowledge of c++ and java so I can't really say how I would have found it if I was a complete beginner. Having said that, however, I must state that I found this book to be very well structured. The concepts were clearly explained and the author doesn't waste time with too many examples, only what is necessary to get the point across. So indeed, in less than 21 days I was up and running (well maybe walking briskly). I look forward to more books by this author.
Then this book may be a 4 or 5 star intro. I have done little to no programming, and am trying to learn with Visual Studio.NET, which made the first couple of chapters a nightmare- until I sat down in a bookstore and read the first two chapters of the Dummies book on C#, which told me what I needed to know about how to use the Visual Studio environment.
Just a qualifying remark for people who are planning on learning C# as their first language using Visual Studio- look into one of the other books. Already know how to use VS? Maybe this book is for you. :-)
Great manual
As ususal of Sam's pulications, very good for the beginners.
