This book by Lillian Baker is the lowest priced and least sought after of her hatpin guides. However, after making the effort to borrow the Collectors Encyclopedia of Hatpins and Hatpin Holders through an inter-library loan, which is considered the best and which sells for a very high price, I was disappointed with the latter and prefer the former. My reason for wanting a book on hatpins was mostly for the illustrations showing the variety of their beauty

Lillian Baker (Author). A useful guide for the beginner who wishes to identify and date hatpins and/or hatpin holders. The illustrations are clear and well laid out showing the fine details of selected hatpins and hatpin holders. The book contains line drawings showing pin shanks and ways of attaching the ornament to the pin. The price guide of items illustrated gives the reader some idea of value, but this will become out of date in time.

The second Baker book (Hatpins and Holders, an Illustrated Value Guide) is easier to find and also very good, but does not have as many pictures to study

The second Baker book (Hatpins and Holders, an Illustrated Value Guide) is easier to find and also very good, but does not have as many pictures to study. The third book (Baker's Encyclopedia of Hatpins and Hatpin Holders) was assembled after Lillian Baker's death and shows more than a few hatpins and holders that are not authentic. Unless you have enough experience to spot the mistakes in this book, it is not a good place to start. After you have a book, study the hatpins, with a magnifying glass if necessary, especially the quality of the materials and construction.

The booklet runs for about 50 A4 pages and contains lots of useful illustrations. Ecellent book and so helpful. IF you want to draw pens, this is good. If you want to USE a pen to draw, it is very instructional, and the author takes the time to illustrate the ideas, and to elaborate on them in a way that is rarely done in modern writing.

My reason for wanting a book on hatpins was mostly for the illustrations showing the variety of their beauty. The Collectors Encyclopedia may have more informative text, but the photos are very poor in my opinion and don't show that much out of the ordinary in artisty beyond the basic bead on the end of a stick. They are all group photos with farther away views and the colors are faded. I felt that this book has a better variety of hatpins to just look at and admire, and I am inspired to pick it up and look at it again, where I do not feel that way about the Collector's Encyclopedia and if feels more like a drudgery to look at it. There are beautiful enamels shown in this guide as well as others. I think this is definitely a worthwhile book on hatpins to add to your library. I must admit I have not studied the text as of yet and may not until I have specific need.

This book is okay. Somehow I expected the pictures to be better and the information to be a little more up to date. I was wrong.
