Juror Karey Bresenhan, the president of Quilts, In. and the director of the International Quilt Festival, offers a thoughtful introduction that reflects on the history of the art quilt. The quilts themselves represent the diversity of the medium and the vast array of approaches that can be taken within it.

As Booklist writes, contemporary art quilts – with the emphasis on art – break the ancient code of block like, follow-the-rules fabric sandwiches. This description just cracked me up for some reason. Juried by Karey Bresenhan, director of the International Quilt Festival, is an eagle’s eye view of 500 different quilt pieces, with styles ranging from hyper-realistic to abstract with a wide array of stitching and material incorporated into the design. Some of the examples include so much more than just fabric!)

This is a rather unusual book.
It is smaller than I expected. Every artist is identified, but I wish there was more information about the
work itself and the process from the artist.

This book offers nice, full-color glossy photographs of each quilt they chose to include.
Some I had seen before, but a lot of brand new ones to enjoy.
This is a great book to add to your quilting library. You won't actually learn anything from it - this is eye candy.
But for those who truly appreciate fiber arts and quilt art, you will love it. Very enjoyable to spend the afternoon
going through all the pages, enjoying such a variety of themes and artistic expressions.

It's almost perfect, like the other reviewers say. But I'm taking off a star due to the small size of the images/book which make it all but impossible to see the details.

The book's size is 8" square, the biggest image inside is probably 6-7" (there are no pictures that run the full page, all have at least a 1" margin), but most aren't displayed in the larger size. Most images are smaller, sometimes four quilts on one page, which makes the pictures very small. Under each quilt is a list of techniques the artist used. Even with a magnifying glass, I found it all but impossible on some to see where the thread painting versus applique versus painting was.

For instance, the quilt used as the books cover has text all over it. even with a magnifying glass, I was unable to read it off the cover or the page the quilt is shown on. There are a few quilts that have "enlargement areas" shown, but very few.

I'd love to see this in a larger format so you can actually see the various techniques on all of the quilts.

I love this quilt book. So much diversity. Though I tend to like traditional quilts the best, this one makes me think twice about quilts as art. And, it helps me realize that all quilts don't have to be on the bed. Some quilts have been a big help to someone who is working their way thru some kind of problem or illness.

I love all of the 500 series books. The photos are very professional and high quality. I love to take the names of the artists and go to Google Images to find more examples of their work. This has really inspired me creatively. It's amazing to me that the publishers can publish these 500 series books at such a low price!

Each page is a new page in my quilting education; a delight to see through experiences quilters eyes. A keeper on my bookshelf in my sewing room where I can reach for it at any time.

I love this book. Though, surprisingly I have not seen many of the quilts in this book, I keep it on my nightstand to peruse before I go to bed. It is self explanatory - inspiring - and laid out so that the art piece speaks more than the words. The pieces in here are amazing and though I think I could never be an art quilter (as opposed to a quilt artist), there is much in here to encourage me to explore beyond my own boundaries.

This book is a beautiful collection of art quilts of all types, techniques and themes that will surely inspire and delight even the most experienced art quilter. Although I already own many publications of art quilts and fiber art, this book surprised me with new work of familiar quilt artists, coupled with images of innovative and unusual work by artists new to me. My only criticism would be that the pages aren't larger, and the quilts pictured have no personal comments from their makers. Nevertheless, this is a book well worth purchasing, to see such a vast array of styles and techniques, and to get an idea of the work being made in this medium around the world. As expected, Lark doesn't disappoint.
It you know nothing about art quilts then this is a great book to give you ideas.
