Scandinavian Design (Paperback). Ingrid Sommar (author) . Since the beginning of the 1990s a new generation of Scandinavian designers has appeared to international acclaim, and once again pushed the boundaries of modern design and innovation. Classic designs such as Arne Jacobsen's Ant Chair have been re-interpreted, while architects such as Snohetta and 3 x Nielsen have made bold statements in their structures. Even cultural icons such as the Icelandic singer Bjoerk have ensured international focus is firmly on the north.

But the Scandinavian design of the era was also heavily influenced by the Nordic region's cold, short winter days and a desire for interiors to be cozy yet bright. These practical considerations led to a new level of spare elegance and a fondness for lighter colors, simple forms, and open-plan spaces. The modern movement was called 'Functionalism' in Scandinavia and architecture and design were intended first and foremost to be useful," says Cambridge, Massachusetts-based, architect Mette Aamodt, cofounder of the firm Aamodt/Plumb. Aamodt spent her childhood in Norway and is the daughter of a Norwegian architect.

Scandinavian style is something so familiar and so pervasive that you may not even realize how much of the world we live in has been shaped by its influence. Young Scandinavian designers continue to find new variations on the themes of simplicity, clean lines and respect for natural materials. In all aspects of Scandinavian life, from interiors to the manufacture of mobile phones, you will find an attention to detail, with form matching function in every way.

The Scandinavian style of interior designing is all about light, breezy spaces. So, to emulate that aesthetic into the floor design, this style requires the use of light colored wood applications. Most Scandinavian style interiors are lined with oak wood or ash wood floors. One of the basic concepts of a good Scandinavian style interior is a focus on the workability of the layout or plan. This functionality makes this style a very pragmatic yet visually desirable commodity in the design market. The Scandinavian style showcases an easy, uncomplicated aesthetic that is derived by a combination of several basic design formations.

I've recently embraced Scandinavian style and I continually turn to this book for help in putting it into perspective. The only problem is it's so full of great design examples that it makes me want more, more more, which totally goes against the whole Scandinavian view that less is more.

Fantastic book showcasing Scandinavian design excellence in many different areas. Textiles, architecture, cuisine, jewelry, technology, etc. I would think there would be new things to see even for the most knowledgeable Scandinavian design fan. Those with an appreciation for the honest, straightforward beauty and elegance of fine Nordic design will not be disappointed. For those with a limited knowledge of it, this book would be an excellent gateway into further study and appreciation. A few somewhat sad aspects, however: Saab autos, no longer made. Nokia, on the ropes and fighting for its life. Volvo cars, now part of a Chinese conglomerate. In spite of these financial setbacks, however, the timeless design and beauty of these products will live on for a very long time. Good book.
