Log Homes Made Easy: Contracting and Building Your Own Log Home. Fortunately, the increasing number and sophistication of log homes is causing people to recognize their limitations when it comes to construction. Fewer people have the time, energy, or inclination to go out and set logs themselves. As an experienced builder, Cooper is a strong proponent of log homes even while he debunks some of the myths associated with them (. their rusticity makes them inexpensive and easy to build). Build Your Own Low-Cost Log Home (Garden Way Publishing Classic). Still, they occupy a solid niche in the home construction market.

I found the first edition of this book in my local library and loved it. It clearly takes you step by step through the many phases of building a log cabin, whether one starts with a kit or goes into the forest and cuts down trees. It has detailed schedules and contains tons of very helpful suggestions. So, when I saw there was a third edition for sale, I jumped on it because some of the concerns raised in the first edition seemed somewhat dated. I was disappointed to see that the newer edition was virtually identical in content to the first. I am glad to have my own copy, but if a used earlier edition is available, it's got everything you need in it.

Provides great details on what a contractor has seen and recommends based on his experiences in the field. Easy to highlight big points and gives examples of paperwork needed to be a owner contractor as well. Nice to find a professional that encourages owners to get more involved with the their homes.

Not what I was looking for. Seems to be somewhat outdated. Has some good information but I would try to find another resource.
I am highly confident that people who are not experienced in the building construction process and who intend to build their own log home should read this book to have an idea on what real problems they may face when they actually begin the construction of a log home. The book helps the reader to define realistic targets in owning a log home rather then reaching for dreams difficult to realize for a beginner. The book provides highly important and critical information on different steps of the process before an owner built log home is finished. The steps begin from defining your goals, expectations, acquiring land, site planning, financing and continue with general contracting, consruction process and maintenence. The chapters are sufficiently detailed for the reader to make decisions in the building process. It also mentions the key issues to be discussed with the general contractors or sub-contractors leading to significant improvement in the overall quality of owner built log home. The book also suggests a buiding process plan which is helpful for an individual to realisticly schedule the work to be completed with minimized risk in waste of time, money and effort. The book is also helpful in estimating the overall time, money and effort needed to succesfully complete an owner built log home rather then focusing on specific problems. I consider that writer, Mr. Jim Cooper, has shared his valuable experienece gained in many years with the readers.
