He founded the Shelter Institute, the nation’s first owner-builder school. I am very impressed with this book. The name "The Visual Handbook of Building And Remodeling" pretty much says it all. This book, which is approximately 1 inch thick and printed on high-quality paper, is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of full-color, isometric, and cross-sectional views of just about anything to do with the construction of a building. There are page after page of design guidelines including dimensions of just about any room in a home.

It's an impressive compilation of information across a wide range of subjects in the field of residential construction, and so very useful to have all this info in one place. However, there isn't a lot of explanation or commentary, mostly it's a collection of data tables and technical figures. Further, despite all that info, not everything is here, although I can't be too hard on the author, as he covers an awful lot of ground. Still, I was hoping to see some details as well as expert comparisons of certain wall and roof construction techniques used in cold climates to improve insulation, but these structures were not covered at all. I still like the book though and will get value from it.

I am very impressed with this book. The name "The Visual Handbook of Building And Remodeling" pretty much says it all. This book, which is approximately 1 inch thick and printed on high-quality paper, is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of full-color, isometric, and cross-sectional views of just about anything to do with the construction of a building. There are page after page of design guidelines including dimensions of just about any room in a home. Diagrams and dimensions of walks, ramps, level changes, kitchens and seating are clearly illustrated including the recommended dimensions. Brick sizes, brick veneer construction and various brick building tables are included. The cross-sections of every construction detail are clearly drawn with each part distinctly labeled. Table after table of easily understood joists and rafter dimensions, allowable spans, truss construction of various types with tables and again clearly illustrated. There are chapters on roofing, with asphalt,cedar and other shingles and flashings. Plumbing fittings are illustrated along with water wells and pumps, PVC pipe, sizing drain pipe, roughing in and dimensions. "Meet the Code", including a partial list of the requirements from the 2006 international residential code are included for many of the trades. There is also excellent coverage of electrical wiring for residential buildings including conduit, switches, lights, tables and cross-sections of each of these. I have only touched on the surface of what's available in this book. If you're planning to build a home from the ground up or just planning to do a little remodeling in a few rooms, you will find this book well worth the investment. Even a building contractor would find some useful advice and perhaps a few new ideas contained in this excellent book.

We actually borrowed the book from the school before we decided to buy it. We are planning to design and build our own tiny house, never had any real construction work experience, this book is the best so far in all the 10+ books we borrowed. All the charts, graphics and information in the book are excellent, I'm amazed about how informative this book is. We love it!

This book is essential reading for anyone considering building a new home, or upgrading the efficiency of an existing one. Charlie covers everything you could possibly want to know about energy efficiency as it relates to residential houses and everything in them from lighting to appliances. Superlatives escape me in trying to describe how wonderfully written and illustrated this book is. He uses language that is clear, simple, direct and pragmatic in perfect harmony with exquisite graphics and crystal-clear charts. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I have been on a personal mission to live as sustainably as practical since 2001 and have done a great many of the things that Charlie suggests in his book so I can speak to their efficacy. Everything he covers is discussed in such clear detail and looked at from so many angles - he literally thought of everything you could possibly encounter in your home that relates to energy conservation.

If everyone took at least a few steps based on reading this book, we would leave the world a much better place. Hopefully many people will choose to read this book before starting on a new home and will end up creating a model of sustainable design and energy conservation. The book is a bargain at any price considering the huge amount of money you can save based on the advice within.

This was the best book I have been given as a gift. The amount of information is staggering and so is it's relvence. This book really touches on the basics of every corner of home design and building and references the building code at every step. Great for anyone considering a remodel or interested in getting into construction. This book will stay with me for many years! It's not just another coffee table book.

Good book, but quite complicated. Lots of diagrams. Lack of description and details. For example, a section on site orientation gives you a quick geographic overview of the earth poles and how to read your compass. None is being said about why this is important, and how to use this information in construction or remodelling process. So if thou are not well familiar with construction process, you'll have to search for additional information.

This book is well written so that the novice/beginner can understand what's involved in the repairing/remodeling process. It covers the foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, insulation, etc.

I draw house plans for people for permit. This is a fantastic book to show people how their home is constructed.

A good builder would include a copy of this book with every home he builds and sells.....just sayin'.
