I recently received 'Dressage Principles Based on Biomechanics'

I recently received 'Dressage Principles Based on Biomechanics'. What a gorgeous and useful book! It is so beautifully designed with such lovely photographs that I feel transported to another world when I'm reading it. The historical material is fascinating but it is also very practical and I'm learning so much. I'm sure it will be an inspiration for many years to come. The author's horses are just magnificent and obviously meticulously and kindly trained and ridden and happy in their work. This is a wonderful tribute to dressage.

Because I suffer from a lack of clinics and upper level instruction in my area, I am an equestrian book junkie. Most books highlight the value of classical training and quote the great masters to great lengths but many have difficulty with the mechanisms of such practice. The title "The Bio-mechanical Basics of Classical Riding" implies a lack of upper level thought. This is most certainly not the case. Dr. Ritter has dissected the important movements and provided the essential how and why for a rider hungry for advanced knowledge. This volume would serve well as a text in an equestrian program.

I was taken by a highly developed training scale that is accompanied throughout by detailed application of the aids and how the neurological "web" functions. This understanding is essential for anyone interested in developing their equine experience. I find that one page or even paragraph at a time is food for perhaps hours of thought. "Equestrian Bio-Engineering"!

Finally, one has the treat of beautiful illustrations and pictures that highlight the textual points providing a visual as well as an intellectual treat!

I am no where near "done" with this book and may never be! There is so much to consider and eventually experience.

I love this book! As a serious student of dressage and a person who learns best by knowing the whys and wherefores of everything being taught, this book is wonderful. The concepts are well thought out and written in such a way at to take very complex ideas and using language everyone can understand, break things down to manageable levels. This is not a book to be read in one sitting.... each section takes a bit of ruminating to fully sink in and the rider should also try to sit on their horse and ride with each section in mind to fully comprehend how things work. My only complaint, and it is a very small one, is the book is coffee table size, which makes it cumbersome for traveling or bedside table reading! Well worth the small inconvenience! It arrived on time, in excellent shape, and as described. Highly recommended.

Dr. Ritter's book is very logical and easy to understand. Throughout this book I had countless "light bulb" moments and I couldn't wait to get on my horses and try them out. The book has a lot of information but also has a lot of examples for clarifying. I specifically enjoyed learning more about stirrup stepping and the importance of where a grounded leg is in relation to the body when applying an aid. There is so much information in this book and exercises for helping the horse and rider to improve with. There are just too many good things to mention - this book is definitely going to become a classic! You'll enjoy this book from cover to cover.

Fabulous, in-depth, and unique. Only a few chapters in and I already know I'll be reading this book over again every few years. Lovely photos and illustrations accompany erudite yet clear text and quotes from the old masters. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to read to learn (and who may not have access to regular dressage lessons). Lots to absorb and ponder.

This is a beautiful book. It has a good combination of text and figures. There is a very interesting summary of the old masters and the advancement in understanding horse biomechanics each made and how that relates to the concepts and terminology we use today. The explanation of and instructions for evaluating the balance and symmetry of your horses' body, thus the value of its training to keep it sound and make the most of its talents in a horse-friendly way, is direct and uncomplicated. It provides a very effective approach to a critically important part of training horses that a rider of any equestrian focus can benefit from and put to use. It is a comprehensive presentation of information not common in the literature and will become one of the core reference books in your training library.

I did not have the highest expectations for this book...simply because the beautiful art and excellent paper quality usually mean that the text is fluffy. Dr. Ritter is a "teacher" in the very best sense of the word. He really wants the reader to understand what to do and how to do it from a bio mechanical point of view. Not necessarily a book for basic beginners, but any serious dressage rider will benefit. Highly recommend it.
Dr Ritters philosophy permeates the book. To get the best from our horses we must work with what is anatomically possible for them. The right aid given at the wrong time will produce unbalanced and poor quality transitions, square circles and shuffling lateral work . Dr Ritter shows how and why and when aids should be given to both enhance the balance and skill of the horse and rider. I found the book interesting and certainly will continue to use it as a reference . The drawings and photos are beautiful .

I would recommend this book to any thinking rider who lacks regular tuition and sometimes misses that elusive ' feel' we all strive for
