It's a male fancy guppy, more specifically a yellow cobra guppy . This strain is also called the golden snakeskin guppy. The name "cobra" was given to these fishes because their bodies resemble the venomous king cobra snake. Their defining characteristic is a cobra design that covers the whole body, not dots but a connected pattern. The black spots are called "monocles" and are an undesirable trait of the cobra strain. Breeders of cobra guppies always strive to cull out fishes with black blotches on their bodies

This book is full of photos and is good for identifying various strains, however it is very weak in the genetics area, covering basic Mendalian genetics (dominant/recessive genes) but nothing else. I was hoping for information on how to breed specific tail shapes, body colors, etc. but was disappointed.

The photos were poorly saturated, old school photography, and he gives no description as to what defines each color group. There are so many new varieties since the book was published. It was a big disappointment.

This book was published in the US in 1989. I suspect it was probably published in Japan even before that year. But it was adapted to add more photos (esp. American breeders from the past) and translated to English. It was so far ahead of anything else ever published (except probably Stan Shubel's first book), that the cover can easily pass for a current book. So this book is almost 25 years old, and you can imagine how far guppy breeding has come since then. The book covers were guaranteed to last until 1999, so the fact many copies of this book are still in reasonably good shape is amazing. I have three copies of this book. Back in the 1990s when I bought my first copy, I don't think I'd ever seen so many great photos of Asian style guppies in one place. And it fueled my interest in guppies to this day.

Other things to keep in mind, these guppies are Asian, so they are not the exact style as the American IFGA type guppies. So there are fewer perfect triangle caudal tails and shorter dorsal fins.

There are a lot of snakeskin/cobra type guppies in here, as well as sword guppies. There are also photos mixed in from notable American breeders from back as early as the 1960s. So these photos reflect that time period in both the photo quality and the guppy quality.

The other comparable book of the same time period, but focusing more on American guppies, would be Stan Shubel's classic Proper Care of Guppies. I have a copy but it's almost impossible to find without spending a small fortune. Stan's later books are much more affordable in the $10 range.
