In my opinion, this book is a wonderful resource of information on English Springer Spaniels. Many people are not aware that there are 2 types of Springers, field and bench. This book clearly details and illustrates the differences between the 2 lines, therefore allowing people to determine which type of Springer best suits their life.

English Cocker Spaniels are small spaniels. Goodall and Gasow, The New Complete English Springer Spaniel, 1984. Welsh Springer Spaniel on the beach. A spaniel is a type of gun dog. Spaniels were especially bred to flush game out of denser brush. By the late 17th century, spaniels had been specialized into water and land breeds. Charles Goodall and Julia Gasow (1984) write that spaniels were "transformed from untrained, wild beaters, to smooth, polished gun dogs. The word spaniel would seem to be derived from the medieval French espaigneul- Spanish -modern French, espagnol.

Preliminary training, field work, show standards and training, and the history of the breed are considered in this study of springer spaniels in the field and the show ring

Book on the field side was good, great information whether you were going to train for a gun dog or not, and a nice little history of the dogs and the hard work by MANY folks...and then you get to the bench side and the writer touted her kennel as if it was the be all and end all of bench dogs, leaving a poor "showing" if you will since while they may have lots of champions, there's plenty of OTHER champions at the time from other kennels and pedigree lines(at the time the book was updated back in the 80's) but the person listed very few of them as "shining examples". When someone plugs their own kennel I tend to not take them seriously in a book that the section is meant to be an overview. ON the other hand all I bought the book for was the section on grooming so I could figure out how trim the puppy I'd gotten. Not my first dog by a long shot but my first ESS...I usually stick to dogs you just brush and don't have to spend a few hours every week trimming up or you end up with a hairy beast.

This is a great book to read about the history of the English Springer Spaniel. Should be in all springer fan's library.

This review is limited to the section II of the book which focused on show and obedience Springers. Section II essentially highlights significant show dogs beginning as early as the 1920's to the mid 1990's. There is a decent chapter on the breed standard and a chapter on how to groom your dog for show. Other than that, it doesn't really tell you how to choose a puppy or raise it (aside from a short section on what to feed your puppy). The chapter on obedience is very brief. I did glance at the section on field Springers. That seemed to be more complete and informative than the show section. It covers the history of the breed, selection of a puppy, early basic training to advanced gun dog training.

This book clearly details and illustrates the differences between the 2 lines, therefore allowing people to determine which type of Springer best suits their life. The only information I found missing was a section on health concerns related to Springers. I would recommend this book for potential Springer owners and current owners alike.
Okay read.
