Theories of Personality book.

Schultzs made the book very interesting with great examples and photographs. Theories of Personality. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 19 years ago. I really thought this book was helpful. I bought this book to complement another book I had trouble understanding. You can't find many easy reading books like this one.

Designed to guide students toward an understanding of personality theories, Ryckman's new edition offers a consistent organization that helps students compare, contrast, and critically evaluate 16 major theories in personality psychology. ..Ryckman uses a theory-by-theory approach to help students develop the skills they need to critically evaluate theories. Ryckman first defines personality, provides basic information about the scientific process and the interrelatedness of theory and research, and describes the criteria scientists use in judging a theory. Then, chapter by chapter, he introduces each major theoretical position with an objective overview of the theorists' basic concepts and principles. A completely rewritten final chapter reviews the current status of the theories and their many contributions to our understanding of human personality. It also highlights the heuristic value of the theories, noting the many ways in which they act as stimulants to the thinking and research efforts of personality psychologists. Ryckman finishes by presenting information about the future prospects of the discipline.
Great textbook. The material is easy to read and gives a good amount of information for each theory.
I bought the book used with the status being "very good." The pages were kept in great condition with little creases or bending of the pages (especially the corners). However, I was disappointed with the highlighting. There was a significant amount which normally wouldn't bother me but the previous user used an orange highlighter so it was hard to ignore. They also proceeded to highlight full paragraphs. It was distracting and obnoxious but I saved a lot of money.
Very detailed and good information but not presented in an easy to see layout. hard to describe without contrasting it to another for you to see exactly what I mean. I prefer alot of bold texts, indentions, bullet points and paragraph headings etc. more of an outline format. This book had less imagery and visual appeal. It was required reading for my class. I ended up writing in the margins and having to outline it myself.
It's the best personality textbook I've read, and believe me, I've read a lot of them. So why didn't I give it five stars? The authors have removed a couple of useful chapters and shuffled the order of chapters around to justify continued publication without really updating much. The third edition from way back when is actually better than the current edition. Minor errors have lingered throughout all editions.
Alright if it was maybe for an introductory personality psych class, but many of the theorists are outdated. While the chapter do devote some time to critiquing the theorist, there is not enough content addressing what is the importance of the theorist today. And no content until the end regarding personality theories coming from people of color or feminist perspectives. But if you're into outdated European and Western white male theorists, there is plenty to go around...
I enjoyed reading this textbook for my class. It was like a refresher on the psychologist I learned about.. It goes in depth about each of their theories
This book is very informative and is written so that anyone can understand how the thoughts of the field of psychology developed to the state that they are practiced today in current times. This makes an excellent preliminary resource to be followed up with "An Introduction to the History of Psychology." Together, these books would give a student a very comprehensive understanding of the field of psychology.
Mr Freeman
