Of all the many approaches to psychology, the psychodynamic comes closest to what the layperson expects from psychology. It tackles issues central to human experience including how our relationship with our parents affects our adult relationships, why men and women are different and why we dream. The psychodynamic approach is also however the most misunderstood and misrepresented in psychology, and 'Freud-bashing' has become a popular academic sport.

We're committed to providing low prices every day, on everything. Jarvis is best known as a British author of psychology textbooks, including both introductory student texts and professional-level texts for teachers.

Theoretical Approaches in Psychology introduces and outlines the six main approaches and considers how each has helped psychologists understand human behaviour, thought and feeling. The Routledge Modular Psychology series is a completely new approach to introductory level psychology, tailor-made for the new modular style of teaching. Each book covers a topic in more detail than any large textbook can, allowing teacher and student to select material exactly to suit any particular course or project.

Using as a text book. Lots of good information. Will be added to my library after the end of the term.

Clear, interesting and well written. Scientists, students and laypeople all will find this book important and fascinating. Peter Fonagy once said that CBT (cognitive-behavior therapy) is a good aspirin but it is not an antibiotic. But they claim that it is. CBT has produced a treatment for the masses that targets some symptoms and does help in the short run. The treatment does not hold up over time, since it does not address the underlying issues. Psychoanalysis (now the broader term, "psychodynamic") is scientifically more supported and its treatment is far superior to CBT, but it is harder to test its effectiveness. It is easy to test CBT which is about 10 sessions of basically persuasion and behavioral practicing. Long term dynamic therapy (LDT) was mainly tested by case study and cohort studies, and recently with randomly controlled studies. Matt Jarvis not only reviews the theories but also reviews the recent research showing the superiority of psychodynamic treatment. A must for teaching psychotherapy and for anyone doing psychotherapy. With this book, there is less confusion over the best type of psychotherapy. An Expert Look at Love, Intimacy and Personal Growth
