Barron's provides simply the best preparation manual for the SAT. It not only familiarizes one with the test, but it is also packed with tips on how to get through some questions faster and how to "beat" some tricky questions. The CD-ROM, which replicates taking the test online, is a godsend.

Hidden Winter

As an SAT Verbal tutor for over 20 years, my book of choice is Barrons for several reasons. #1- More practice tests than any other book #2- harder than the real test, at least in verbal #3- excellent vocab cards in the back which also serve as a great core vocab for college #4- avoids the weird questions found in ARCO #5- maybe not as much explaining as Princeton or Kaplan, but TRIPLE the practice -- If you need the explanations, get a combo of the books #6- Follow this book up with the 10 REAL SAT'S and you will see that they are now a piece of cake!! #7- when the students that I coach use this book, they are assured of a verbal point gain anywhere from 100 to 210 points, depending on how much they put into it. There are other reasons for this book to be a master tutor's book of choice, but in the interest of not being too verbose, let me just say "TRY IT!!"

The included flashcards are a great way to learn ~150 obscure but important words. One reviewer vilified the book, claiming the definitions were fallacious. After scrupulous review, I belive his investigation was profoundly perfunctory. Also included are three vocabulary lists totaling 3500 words taken from high school and college literature. If you don't have a year to learn the whole megalist, there are shorter lists of high frequency tested word and high frequency tested key words. One small sobering reality is, however, the 3500 word list doesn't appear to include all of the words given in classic vocabulary building books like "1000 Most Important Words" by Norman W. Shur.
There an excellent number verbal and math problems including all the types seen in the SAT. The problems seem very indicative of those on the actual SAT, maybe slightly more difficult which is in contrast to the Barron's SAT II Physics and SAT IIc math books which have practice tests much harder that the real thing.
Also included for what they are worth are the test taking strategy tips like all test prep books have. I take these pretty lightly myself.

Nalmetus

The test in this book are very similar to the actual tests. I have used both the 19th and 20th editions of this book. I have found both of them to be very helpful. The only problem I found is that this book focuses a lot on long range strategies like suggested reading materials and a huge vocabulary list. But the practice exercises in this book are very helpful and the test is very realistic. I suggest this book as a must for people who plan to take the SAT I.

Well, Well, Well. This is definitely a "must-have" for anyone who wants to take the SAT and hasn't got a 1600 for the first time. I must admit that I was skeptical that any book could help me prepare for the verbal or math section, but after following all the guidelines in "How to prepare...", I reconsidered my thoughts. I am not a native English speaker, that is why it is hard for me to learn words like "arroyo", but after some practice I found out that studying can be fun and it was largely due to my determination and this book's tips that I almost finished learning them all. I said almost since, apparently, 3 moths allocated to SAT weren't enough - this is where I come to an advice to you, all those wanting to take this test - plan much ahead! I've studied math at a high level, and even now I am majoring in Applied mathematics, but I hadn't even thought about the great tips&tricks I found in this book - "plug-in numbers" is a phrase I will certainly remember for all of my life, and it is a tactic that I've also used in my recently taken test. I won't brag about my scores - I don't know them yet (I've taken the test on the 4th of November). And I don't want to make any assumptions since I've learned that SAT is as unpredictable as an earthquake. There's one thing I can say - this book's tests were harder than the real thing, and they were really helpful! Thank you Sharon Weiner-Green Ira Wolf for such a marvelous job!

My mother bought me several SAT review books this year. By far this was the most useful. I just got my SAT scores back and I increased 230 points from my PSAT---much more than any of my friends who took expensive classes.I was particularly impressed with the math section and with the TACTICS for getting the right answer to questions I didn't know how to do.I would recommend this book very highly to any student preparing for the SAT I.

This is the first time I ever used a review book and felt like it really, really helped. Two of my friends who were seniors this year told me they had used it in a course and their instructor had told them it was the best book available. So I tried it. But I used it on my own; I didn't take a course of any kind. Incredible--my SAT scores this May were 330 points higher than my PSAT score. Of course, I was thrilled. The whole book was good---tactics, review, and practice tests--but what I really found amazing were the math tactics. I am NOT a great math student in school, but I learned tricks to do problems that I never would have gotten on my own. My PSAT math score: 470. My SAT math score: 690. You do the math on that one! The book also really helped with my vocab. If you are serious about getting into college and want to really do well on the SAT, GET THIS BOOK!

I received a copy of this book as a gift and my scores jumped from a 1380 on the PSAT to a 1590 on the SAT! I owe it all to the careful, thoughtful, and insightful ideas of Dr. Ira Wolf. I would never have been as successful as I was without his help. Everyone out there who is looking to improve their scores should follow my example and get some help from the masters.

This book is great for studying for the SAT. It has some good tips and advice for you to boost your score. The practices are thorough and well written. After doing my SAT I felt pretty good. However, I did find that the Math sections in the real SAT were not nearly as difficult as they were in the book. But the Verbal sections in the book were not as difficult as the ones in the real SAT. So just be careful.
