Trapped on a dying world, the Doctor and Charley come face-to-face with those responsible for the war to end wars, while C'rizz learns the terrible truth about what has happened on Bortresoye. But who will be the last to leave the planet?

The Doctor, Charley, and C'Rizz find themselves stranded in a dying world suffering from nuclear Winter, the Doctor and Charley are injured and taken to an underground shelter where the world's leader Excelsior is planning for her Victory speech and getting a gown seemingly unaware that her people are all dead while the government ministers try to plot an escape.

This is a bleak production, but a brilliant one as well. As a cautionary anti-War tale, there are few Doctor Who stories that The story is filled with great psychological moments, as well as an eerie mystery regarding the ghost C'Rizz is seeing, which the Doctor is initially dismissive of.

Carolyn Jones is superb as Excelsior and the cast shines. For the first time, I really connected with C'Rizz as a character. His concern for Charley is touching. Charley is paralyzed in the first part and struggles with many key questions but an understated way. She does manage to see through Excelsior in a solid scene.

The High Concepts that characterize the best of the Divergent Universe are here. The eerie sound of Excelsior's speech being broadcast to a population that's no longer alive is a chilling audio image.

I do feel the ending, which served as a fix, was also a bit of a cheat. Still, this is solidly written and moving piece that brings Doctor and Companions to life brilliantly.

Doctor Who the last brings to mind the close of David Tennant's second season Doctor Who - The Complete Third Series. It starts off very strong, becomes average in the middle and finishes very poorly.

We begin with the doctor confronting his past and some of his late companions, Apparently the writer of The Boy That Time Forgot (Doctor Who) ignored this episode. He then finds himself and his companions in a post nuclear holocaust. Meanwhile the survivors deep in a bunker massage their leader Madame Excelsior with thought of victory parades and gowns etc etc etc.

As you might suspect they shortly find their way into the bunker but not without disaster as we see the excelsior go madder and madder to the point of murder.

There are one or two bright spots; Charley dealing with her paralysis Crizz dealing with the loss of Charley but as one by one the supporting characters are eliminated the story nears a climax that resolves the story. It's interesting but doesn't hold the story built above it.

The performances are better than the material, particularly Conrad Westmaas as CRizz. Carolyn Jones as Madame Excelsior is pretty good in her role as well. You find yourself hating her very much. The fatalistic ending perhaps fits the 8th doctors character per Dr Who Twin Audio CD Neverland (Doctor Who)and Scherzo (Doctor Who) but it just doesn't work. In fact the crash was so bad it really spoilt the whole thing.

Of the episodes 8th doctor episodes I've heard so far it ranks with Dr Who Phobos (Dr Who Big Finish) and Invaders from Mars (Doctor Who). This is not proud company.

Buy it if you must to complete the set.
