Snow Crash Neal Stephenson. An essential text-book for understanding the world today. Neal Stephenson's objective rendering of characters' behavior/responses to situations provides a very useful juxtaposition to the readers' typical emotional one, and gives a matter-of-fact tone to future-shock-y situations that the reader would otherwise not know how to process.

Written in an attempt to salvage a few elements from an earlier graphic novel project, this book became important, and changed my life. While the number of copies sold still isn't as large as people tend to assume, it made far more of an impact than my earlier works, and launched my career in a number of ways.

Good read, not much about VR, the book coined the MetaVerse so I was expecting more on that.
ideas on hacking human brains.

I purchased this on my phone and will be returning it since I don't speak German. Also, it took quite some time to get to its destination. The novel Snow Crash is excellent though.

Well, I opened up the pages and I found something awesome... it was entirely in german! The description didn't mention it was in german, but I plan on using this version alongside an american version I own for learning by transliteration :D

This is a fun cyberpunk adventure which I enjoyed reading a lot. The story takes place in two worlds, the first is the physical world which has changed considerably from the one we know. The land has been divided up into franchises owned by corporations, churches and the Federal government. Each franchise has their own laws with enforcement provided by corporations and in one case automated systems (Fido is very cool).

The other world is the metaverse, a 3D internet where people interact through avatars, in many ways it resembles the physical world but for hackers the rules can be different.

The story concerns a virus that crashes computer systems, but also human minds or more specifically hacker minds. The story revolves around two central characters, the first is Hiro, a Katana wielding hacker who also delivers pizza in the real world for the Mafia. The other is a young girl Y T, who is a courier on an air board. Together they investigate and discover a plot to control people's minds.

For me the best part of the book is some of the ideas it explores, the main one being the linguistic virus that is the core of the story. There's some excellent and interesting thinking behind this that was a joy to unravel. The ideas for the world were also fascinating, for example the floating city built around an aircraft carrier that sails around the Pacific Ocean.

The pacing of the story is spot on and once it gets started clips along at a decent pace, there's a decent mix of characters (Raven is a fun bad guy) and it's well written. Overall an excellent read.

3.5 stars. Equal parts ridiculous but cool. Some parts of the novel really dragged, but it more than made up for it with some imaginative scenes and concepts. Perhaps most amazing the story managed to make sense in the end despite making almost no sense to me in the middle of the story, so much so that I nearly gave up on it.

Only Neal Stephenson can bring out a relationship between Ancient Sumerian and binary, and that connection causes knowing either one well to make a person susceptible to control by others. Only he could get away with giving the main character a name like Hero Protagonist. This Book is full of absurdities, yet Neal Stephenson manages to pull them off with grace and beauty. In a future vaguely similar William Gibson's, Hero try's to find out why an old colleague has gone catatonic and who caused it, and also hopes to renew a romantic relationship in the process, not to mention make a few bucks on the way.

I am not cursing, but I am zero percent German and therefore can not read it. They shold be in English! However I liked the sample.
If you want to know the future of MMO games, then this is a must read.
