My Sparking Misfortune works on numerous levels

My Sparking Misfortune works on numerous levels. First off, I was surprised it turned out to be so child-friendly when one of the reasons I had put off reading it was that my book blog focuses on kid lit. It’s rare to find a clean adult book these days. Second, those that are clean aren’t often this interesting – a page turner by tween and adult standards.

Oh my goodness! This book is VERY WELL WRITTEN! An 11 year old whom I dearly love begged me to get the two books in this series for her Kindle library. I tried to discourage her from buying them, as she had already read them. She insisted that she would want to read them over and over. After getting the books, she asked if I would like to read them with her. We read this one together and plan to read the second one together, too. As I was reading, I understood why she wanted to own them. Oh my goodness, this author is AMAZING and had me hooked very quickly. I didn't want to put the book down and when we finished around 10 pm, I wanted so badly to start the second book, right away, but wisdom reigned and we went to bed. This may have been written for tweens or teens, but it fully kept MY attention. I didn't know what would happen next & I was often surprised at where the author went with the story. This story is BOMB DIGGITY good! Buy the two books in the series!!! Laura Lond, whoever you are, I LOVE your writing style!

Long ago, I picked up this book even though I didn’t have time to read it because the concept of a villain main character intrigued me. My Sparking Misfortune called me through months of editing jobs and a huge TBR pile until I found myself on a plane without access to my laptop. Right away, the witty dialog and humor made me smile. What a fun read! When the plane landed, I got aggravated that I had to get back to work. Not to say I rushed through my paying jobs, but I might have cut my workdays a little short.

Third, it has good life lessons for kids and kids at heart, all in sly disguises. Fourth, how many villains make you laugh aloud? Or fifth, fail so miserably at villainy that they end up becoming heroes (in denial)? If I need six to convince anyone to read this book, try mysteries. Like why does the xxx keep chasing this anti-hero? And why does a powerful *** choose to help him? Their dialog almost had me in stitches.

What’s not to like? Well, editing problems like comma splices. I also wanted a hint about whether the anti-hero had feelings for the princess. An incomplete story arc…yes, it’s a series, but still, a loose end or two more could have been tied up. None of those problems made me regret reading My Sparkling Misfortune. In fact, I look forward to the next installment. I give 4 of 5 stars for kids and adults. No disclaimer is necessary because I was not provided a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Amazon says I bought the book, so I probably got it when it was free. But I always give honest reviews, and I can’t think of a better book to make anyone of any age smile at devious doings that backfire.

In what has to be the most unique and clever middle grade fantasy that I have encountered in a long while, Lond’s first installment in her Lakeland Knights series is told from the villain’s perspective. Arkus is the villain, and he’s actually a pretty bad one: his attempts to gain the upper hand by capturing an evil spirit to do his bidding is foiled when he gets an overly optimistic, cheerful and good natured ‘sparkling’ who is now bound to him for five years. Arkus is wholly enamored of the ‘bad boy image’ he is struggling to put forward, yet his every slip into less than villainous behavior results in fulsome praise by his indentured sparkling. A quest to end all, with his own nefarious turn on events to give him the upper hand, there is action and fantasy aplenty to keep readers and listeners interested and wanting to know what comes next.

Narration for this story is presented by A. T. Chandler, who manages to imbue Arkus with a touch of the over-blown cartoon villain, the sparkling with a lilting irish brogue, and the other voices with qualities that suit both their position and age, and never seems to miss a trick. I wasn’t sure at first if I would like the voices, but there is, as the story proceeds, a feeling that Arkus is struggling to keep the mask of the villain voice even as he is sensing (to his distress) tat he is changing for the good. Clever insets as he tells us he is using sarcasm or scorn that doesn’t quite reach the voice, it is clear that Arkus is very invested in his image, and will have difficulty releasing his stranglehold.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title for purpose of honest review via AudioBook Jukebox. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
