You're going along reading it and all of a sudden you realize that there are not enough pages in the book. You realize you're not going to find out how it ends. The ending will be unsatisfying. The ending will simply be an ending because the author got tired of writing the story. So, while the end of the story is completely spoiled, I won't spoil it for you should you choose to read it. It did hold a lot of good truths about things that we believe even today in different forms, but it seems like in the last chapter or two Monica Hughes just decided she was tired of writing and tired of deadlines looming; so she just patched up the story without much explanation. There is a sequel, The Dream Catcher , but I am not optimistic that it's going to solve a lot of my issues. (Besides, I've never been a fan of reading another book just to find out how a different book ends.)

Like most of her books, this one deals with self discovery and learning the truth of the world around them… Tomi is an arrogant son of Arc One’s Overlord and we come into the story right when he’s plugging in the last pack of his computer thing that basically plugs in all this knowledge into his brain… this makes him a Lord… people who can’t accept that much get lower positions in the Arc One… and those who can’t accept any computer plug-ins become slaves… as is the case with any society that has slaves, there’s some very unhappy people and when an uprising happens Tomi suddenly finds himself knocked down a garbage shaft that leads to the outside… something that no one has seen in 100′s of years… that’s when it all begins… in it’s way it’s a simple adventure but it’s still amazing and there’s always those twist and turns that catch you off guard and have you digging in for more… and is often the case the ending is bittersweet but still amazing… on it’s own it is a great book but now I’m hoping that the 2nd one will be as good…

It is a well written book that teenagers and young adults would enjoy reading. The way Monica writes it is as if you are experiencing the same life as the characters.

I first read this one about fifteen years ago and I was very impressed. There's always the risk when you revisit childhood favourites - you might find them utterly daft. Not this one! While the book is somewhat naive - it's a book for kids, after all - it was still quite charming.

After an apocalypse of sorts, group of people locked themselves in Arc One, trying to maintain knowledge through the dark ages. The society has become a rigid class society: lords on top, workers in the middle, slaves on the bottom with soldiers controlling them.

Main character Tomi is a son of a lord, part of the ruling elite. When he comes of age, he's given proper access to the information databases. Unfortunately there's a slave rebellion, which ends up with Tomi being tossed out of the Arc. What a strange world he finds outside!

It's a lovely, positive story. I'd recommend this to kids that are into science fiction without a doubt - and also to adults, looking for a quick and pleasant read. (Review based on the Finnish translation.)

This book contained an intriguing concept for me when I was a kid. Basically it was about a far-future society in which people enhanced their brains with computer "paks," and if your body rejected the implant that let you add these weird things to your brain then you ended up in a dead-end service job and never had a chance to pursue greatness. It could happen to anyone. But some people who are still living wild outside this society have rejected this way of life, and the main character ends up finding out more about them. . . .
