Mollie Katzen's books are the best! if you are looking for new ways to fix vegetables then this is just one more addition to her other stellar cook books when cooking vegetables. Never a dull veggie in sight! Started buying her books in the mid 70's with the "Moosewood Cookbook" and have continued to collect until I now own just about all of her books except the cooking for children books - can't speak for those. I have made hundreds of her recipes over the years and my family isn't even vegetarian! In fact my husband is a "dyed in the wool" meat and potatoes eater but he has loved many, many of her recipes as a whole meal - "veggie meal night" or as a side dish to a big steak! Always my go-to cookbooks for a breath of fresh air for veggie cooking! You won't be disappointed.

Some of my Moosewook books are so well used that they look as if they've been through the food processor so I think I can say with substantial credibility that I am familiar with this writer's previous work. That may, however, be the root of the problem. I should have taken heed of the word "uncommon" in the title. I mistakenly expected the every day home cooking approach of previous volumes. In my casual home these are recipes for special occassions and entertaining.

It's a pretty book and the combinations of ingredients are tantalizing, but when it came down to execution something was lacking. Every dish turned out not quite right; seasoning a little bland, texture a little watery, colors unappealing. I suspect these recipes will yield better results in the hands of a serious cook who has the skill to adapt to the variable characteristics of fresh produce which can vary in flavor, color, and water content based on geography and season and who has the time and skill to watch the cooking process carefully to get just the right textures.

I checked this out at the library, tried Caramelized onion, sauce, green beans and tofu, and chimichurri. Everything was delicious, the ingredients basic and not too many, and prep time not at all taxing. I am always looking for ways to make veggies and/or fish tasty and interesting. Oh my, this book will be one of my standbys. Ordered a hard copy as I tend to be hard on it.

This cookbook was my favorite for ten years, until I discovered Bittman's. Now it is my second favorite. You can cook from this book every day without getting bored. I was unimpressed with Katzen's earlier books. She hit a home run with this one. My favorites are grilled vegetables and Fire Cracker Red Beans (which are not spicy hot, as the title suggests).

I borrowed this book from the library and loved it so much, I ordered it on Amazon the next day. I am new to organic gardening and am trying to find new ways to use the vegetables that we've planted, so this book is a godsend.

Vegetable Heaven is packed with easy recipes and helpful tips for using the vegetables in your garden and so much more. I'm not a strict vegetarian or vegan, but these recipes absolutely make you want to incorporate a less-meat/more-veg-based approach into your dietary lifestyle. I have made her bitter greens with tart cheese (to rave reviews) and the roasted tomato/garlic sauce and they were both super-easy and phenomenal. Not only that, but she writes with a dash of humor and you feel more like you're being treated to a great recipe from a friend over coffee than trying to keep up with a stoic chef's "my way or the highway" edict.

To be quite honest, I am looking forward to eating my way through this book!

Can't wait to try all of the recipes in here.
I'm a meat-cutter's daughter with very little natural inclination with vegetables other than good ol' broccoli and brussel sprouts. I'm looking forward to really making vegetables the center focus, with Mollie (my grandmother's and daughter's name) the teacher!

Filled with good stuff! Among my favorites are the savory corn cakes with chipotle cream, black beans in mango sauce, bittersweet chocolate banana mousse, and the blueberry-lemon mousse pie. There are lots of yummy and easy things to make for guests. All real crowd pleasers.
