When it comes to weight-loss related things Richard Simmons reigns supreme. His decades-long fight against fat has been a life's work. His book "Sweetie Pie" has a wide selection of scrumptious desserts, all with reduced fat & calories. For that special occasion any of the items would be a delicious offering--AND healthier versions of some classic recipes.

Richard is such a character, and his personality really shines in this book. It's a genuinely fun read and is also surprisingly informative. Some low-fat cookbooks try to do away with the fat and sugar completely - this book doesn't. Richard acknowledges that you do need fat and sugar to make delicious desserts, but he stresses moderation more than deprivation. You won't find any crazy substitutions or techniques in this book either. The recipes are all very accessible in terms of ingredients and the fanciest technique is probably beating egg whites for a meringue.

The layout of this book is pretty much perfection and how I wish all cookbooks were designed. Each page has a beautiful photo of the finished product and great tips sprinkled throughout, from portion control to decorating ideas to recipe variations. At the end of each recipe, he includes the nutritional value along with the nutritional value of a traditional version of the same recipe so you can see how much healthier his recipes are.

The book is broken into 8 sections:

Welcome to My Dessert Kitchen - an introductory chapter with background information on calories and fat and details about common baking ingredients and kitchen tools. He includes a really handy table detailing the calorie and fat content in different dairy products as well as a breakdown of mono-unsatured/poly-unsatured/saturated fats in butters and oils.

Smart Cookie - classic cookie recipes made healthier with typically with egg whites and applesauce. The lemon bars are great, as are the brownies.

The Cake Walk - delectable low-fat cakes, including cheesecake, pound cake, and even baklava! They're so good, you won't believe they're low fat.

Pie in the Sky - pies and tarts for every season. He includes his own spice mix for the pumpkin pie, so forget about that store bought pumpkin pie mix.

The Big Chill - lovely iced desserts, including granitas and a frozen souffle.

Puddin' on the Ritz - comforting pudding desserts, from rice and bread pudding to parfait to eclairs.

In the Garden of Eden - fruit desserts, which are automatically healthier because they have fruit (that's how that works, right?). Guilt-free cobblers, crumbles, and even lollipops.

You Can't Take It With You - for those times when you can throw low-fat out the window, these are Richard's all-time favorite desserts. Creme brulee, pralines, and tiramisu, among others, these certainly aren't low-fat, but sometimes, you just have to indulge.

This isn't just a great low-fat cookbook, it's a great cookbook period. Richard does a great job explaining why his substitutes are low-fat and why they work. More than anything, he stresses moderation and enjoying what you eat. My favorite line is one that really encompasses what this book is about:

"Food is our special friend, yours and mine. Treat it as you would any friend - with respect ... Approach deserts with good sense, and they will make you smile. They are the icing on the cake of life."

Richard Simmons' "Sweetie Pie" is a delight for the eyes and the tastebuds. It's filled with mouth-watering, well done photographs of luscious desserts which might even earn it a spot as a coffee table book. As noted by another reviewer, people with diabetes can indulge in some of the recipes.

I was skeptical when I first got the book but after trying several recipes, I am convinced this book is worth keeping. The book holds some of the desserts that one would normally hesitate to indulge because of the high calorie content but Simpson made it less "guilty" for us. You will not even realize it is a low-fat version! Even friends of mine who do not believe in low-fat recipes gave it a "Two Thumbs Up!" My favourites are the tangerine-orange poppyseed cake and the cheese tartlettes.
Man, if I could take one cookbook with me to heaven, this is it! It has fantastic tasting recipes (Cranberry-Apple Crisp and Chocolate Mousse Pie) and the fat content is so low, it's astounding! How does Richard do it? Everything in this book is fabulous, and so low in fat! Must be magic!
