This is a graphic novel adaptation of the novel by Jules Verne in Spanish. I thought the illustrations were beautiful and it really brought the monsters and characters alive. The shortened story still included the major points and allowed the reader to feel the emotions of the characters well. This is a not especially exciting retelling of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I really like the character designs, but the art is sometimes a little off. The pace is rushed, as the author tries to fit in all the events of the original novel without leaving any time to show them (Atlantis gets one panel!). I do have to give points for including Conseil, who gets left out of most adaptations.

Professor Pierre Aronnax is a marine biologist sent with his assistant Conseil to investigate what monster has been sinking ships around the world. When the monster hits the ship they are on, they and harpooner Ned Land find themselves rescued by the strange captain of a submarine. At first delighting in Captain Nemo's underwater tour, Prof. Aronnax eventually comes round to Ned Land's view that they need to escape Nemo's prison. But escaping an underwater prison can be challenging.

This is a graphic novel adaptation of Jules Verne's classic. It does a pretty good job of sticking to the original. One might argue it improves on the story since it cuts down on the pages and pages of descriptions of fish Verne put in. The illustrations are average for Campfire. My biggest qualm with them is that they have a tendency to make main characters hard to distinguish from one another. For the most part, outfits and hair color help with that in this.

Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. A ship sinking in the background and some hunting are the only violence.

Jules Verne's classic "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" looks more like a period adventure story and less like cutting edge science fiction, until you remember it was first published in 1870. The first primitive submarines had only just made their appearence, and the idea that people could live under the sea for months was, well, science fiction...

This Campfire Classic graphic novel nicely captures the essentials of Verne's novel, in which a French marine biologist named Professor Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and an intrepid Canadian whale harpooner named Ned Land are part of a U.S. Navy expedition aboard the U.S.S. ABRAHAM LINCOLN, to hunt down a great sea monster. The encounter with the sea monster goes badly, but the three men end up as prisoners on a mysterious man-made sea monster, the submarine NAUTILUS. Their adventures aboard the NAUTILUS, under the command of the expatriate Captain Nemo, make up the bulk of the story, as the submarine roams the oceans in search of wonders, while finding the occasional real sea monster.

The original narrative was adapted by Dan Rafter, with excellent illustrations by Bhupendra Ahluwalia. "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" the graphic novel is highly recommended to all ages.
