The Civil War in Fayet. Not only did this book give me new appreciation for local history, but I even found some of said kinfolk in its pages! Aside from that, McKinney presents the abundance of information chronologically and clearly while allowing the voices of soldiers and civilians to shine through.

In Tim McKinney's book, The Civil War in Greenbrier County West . For much of the war, Greenbrier County and large portions of West Virginia were home to guerillas and bushwhackers.

In Tim McKinney's book, The Civil War in Greenbrier County West Virginia, the reader sees and feels what life and death are like on the edges, the margins, of a great war. It is an examination of the war in a microcosm. Unfortunately, for the most part, the reader of this book must get there on his/her own. That is because the author chose not to write the book from the viewpoint described above. Rather, he seems to have written this book for a purely regional audience.

Paperback Edition 224 pages; Published by Pictorial Histories Publishing Co., Charleston WV. Taken from back cover; War in Western Virginia. In mountain warfare the learning of the books and strategists is of little use. In a country where it is impossible to find enough level land to muster a company of militia, there is very little scope for ingeniously studied military evolutions are consummately arranged plans of campaign on paper. It is impossible for the books to embrace the thousand topographical features of a wild region, where all nature seems drunk in the heels and mountains and high frolic. The only rule of warfare in such a region is to throw away all rule. The policy there is to fight and March, to march and fight. Ingenious ink and paper plans of campaign are about as useless in the region about the Big Sewell Mountain as a McCormick's reaper in a mountain wheat "field."
