Source Report: Runaway Slave Advertisements: a Documentary History from the 1730s to 1790. The four volume collection was compiled by Lathan Windley and printed in 1983 by Greenwood Press. What is it? Runaway Slave Advertisements is a four volume collection containing thousands of runaway slave advertisements published in weekly newspapers in the Southern states of Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, South Carolina and Georgia. When was it made? By Whom? Why? The four volume collection was compiled by Lathan Windley and printed in 1983 by Greenwood Press. Runaway slaves in the South were symbols of the social discontent with the slave economy.

Meanwhile steady work of compilation of historical records made a fruitful result: Runaway Slave Advertisements: A Documentary History from 1730s to 1790, 4 volumes, compiled by the late L. A. 7 The volumes extracted advertisements of runaways from several newspapers issued in the South of the 18th century. The study on runaways in southern Maryland mentioned above also used the volumes as main sources, but studies on Georgian escapers scarcely utilized them. Generally, statistical and comprehensive studies based on Windley s source books are still insufficient.
