Into the Abyss: The Last Years of the Waffen-SS, A Photographic History presents a comprehensive record of the elite Waffen-SS divisions that fought both on the Eastern and Western Fronts during the last two years of the war. Drawing on previously unpublished photographs, many of which have come from the albums of SS veterans, it presents a unique visual account of these formations, some elite and some thrown together from barely-trained conscripts. With an accurate in-depth descriptive caption every photograph brings to life the tactics and components that made up a fully-fledged Waffen-SS division. / With over 180 unpublished photographs accompanied by detailed captions and text, Into the Abyss presents a captivating glimpse of one of the most well-known and notorious military organizations of the Second World War, focusing on the final 18 months of the conflict.

Large collection of photos that are good however with the large number of errors I found in the photo captions I returned the book to Amazon. Misidentified vehicles and weapons were the most numerous. I am a long time researcher of the Waffen SS on the Eastern front and I would not recommend this book until corrections are made to the text information.

INTO THE ABYSS: THE LAST YEARS OF THE WAFFEN SS, 1943-1945-A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY

They were the soldiers sworn by an oath of loyalty to follow Hitler into a maelstrom of genocidal barbarity. They were the elite of the German military in World War II. They were the Waffen SS. On 22 June 1941, before dawn, German troops invaded the former Soviet Union. The Barbarossa Campaign included some of the greatest episodes in military history: it also allowed Hitler's ideological warriors, the Waffen SS, to give full vent to their ideological way of war. It provided the killing ground in which some of the worst atrocities seen by humanity were committed. This book is an exploration of the Waffen SS who gained much of their reputation while fighting on the Eastern Front in the former Soviet Union. Germany's war against the former Soviet Union in World War II, in particular the role of the Waffen SS forms much of the subject matter of this book. INTO THE ABYSS: THE LAST YEARS OF THE WAFFEN SS, 1943-1945-A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY is a slim book of 144 pages. It contains many new and interesting photographs of the war on the Eastern Front. Several photographs do appear to show soldiers in Wehrmacht, not SS, uniforms. Other photographs are blurred and hard to tell. Each photograph includes a brief, one to three sentence decription. As noted, the problems with some of the photographs-perhaps 10%-is that they aren't the best of quality, often appearing grainy, blurry, or washed out. Others look crisp and clear. These photographs were retrieved primarily from private collections in Germany and elsewhere. While I agree with Mr. Truthteller's review of this book, there are few accounts about the final collapse of the Eastern Front because the historical records were either unavailable or didn't exist. Even though the author has made a number of mistakes, this is still a good book that would make an excellant addition to anyone's library on the Eastern Front during World War II.

Once again, Baxter delivers an absolutely terrible book about a subject he obviously doesn't know anything about. As others have stated, the errors in this book are too numerous to mention, the photos are often miscaptioned or captioned incorrectly, and this is just pure garbage, to put it kindly. If you can find this on the library book sale table for $1, buy it, it'll be worth the fun you'll have picking it apart. Aside from that, this is a useless book.

As with other reviewers, the captions are full of errors, many of the photos are early mid war, there is even soldiers clearly wearing army uniforms, titled as Waffen SS. A real dissapointment.

If you are looking for a good basic overview containing many photographs showing the Waffen SS in action during the final two years of the war then this book is for you.

It is incorrect to say that many of the photographs are early war images that have been recycled. The uniforms and equipment in use clearly indicate a late war setting. In addition, despite the very many books published on this subject, this title managed to come up with a number of images I have not seen before anywhere else.

Considering the price you can pick this up for on Amazon, it's well worth adding to your collection, is sturdily bound and nicely printed on glossy paper.
