Thomas Costain 4 book series on England's Plantagenet Dynasty is a must read for history enthusiasts. I would go so far as using it as an introduction to English history. Many accuse the author of bias. This is true to an extent.

The Three Edwards (1958). The Last Plantagenets (1962).

Costain noted in his foreword that he initially intended the book to be about Bayan and Edward I, but became caught up in the legend of Thomas a Becket's parents: an English knight married to an Eastern girl. The book was a selection of the Literary Guild with a first printing of 650,000 copies and sold over two million copies in its first year. The Three Edwards (1958). There are periods in history when things are seen dimly as through a veil. This is the period covered by Thomas B. Costain in THE LAST PLANTAGENETS. Such were the years from 1377 to 1485. It is not claiming too much to say that here the veil has been raised and that throughout the book a bright light plays on this century of excitement and romance and stories stranger than fiction

Details the developments that characterized the reigns of England's monarchs from Richard II to Henry VII

This is my second copy of this paperback and I'm so glad I found it. Costain is a very entertaining author and I use this book as a quick reference as I wander through the Middle Ages. I have difficult with the chronology of the Plantagenets, so I keep this little gem next to my bed in order to refresh my memory of the human beings the author describes. Other authors to into greater detail, but Costain's descriptions are eminently readable.

Wonderfully readable! The reader is pulled into history almost visually. If this were an academic history, I would say that it's too judgmental (the author makes his approval and disapproval evident). But it's popular history, without the requirements of authorial detachment and evidence citations, and it's darned good history! What's more, it's a rattling good read.

There are four books in this series, The Conquering Family, The Magnificant Century, The Three Edwards, and The Last Plantagents. This series covers English history from William the Conquerer to Richard the third. Costain writes history like a novel which I personally love. I know that some people object to his approach but I personally feel that the characters of the past come alive and the history is accurate.

The Last Plantegents covers the reign of Richard the second through Richard the third and ends with an examination of the case against Richard the third. Costain is firmly in the apologists camp and makes a pretty good case for the defense.

interesting to explore a family which took over running England for a few generations. the book came as a surprise. England has always seem so secure in its "Englishness" never to be taken over by a foreign power.

Thomas Costain 4 book series on England's Plantagenet Dynasty is a must read for history enthusiasts. I would go so far as using it as an introduction to English history. Why? these books,of which The Last Plantagenets is the fourth, read more like novels than a dry chronicle of events.

Many accuse the author of bias. This is true to an extent. It made me want to do more research on the events in question. The death/assassination of Thomas a Becket has many speculations. Costain had his theory as well in the first bookThe Conquering Family.

What was welcome in this particular volume was reopening the case of Richard III guilt or lack of thereof in the death of the princes in the Tower.

The other books tackle controversies. In Magnificent Century we learn of King Henry III. Compared to the other Henrys he is an obscurity. We do find out that much occured in his reign. The three famous and sometimes notorious Edwards followed him.

All four books are welcome additions to my library on English history. Now, if Amazon could only have Thomas Costain's books on the Kindle....
