Easy to read book about the war in North Africa. A lot of condensed information. Sounds like a personal beef that Sears had with Patton for some reason. Anyway, I would recommend this book for anyone who wants an overview of the African theater of World War I. . He was only the commander of Operation Torch, and the commander of US II Corps when they recovered after Kasserine Pass. Bradley and Ike are both given mention, but not Patton.

The struggle for the North African coast of the Mediterranean was unlike any other campaign of World War II. Because it was fought like a tournament in an empty arena, with no one but the contestants getting hurt and with few of the distractions of politics or large civilian populations, the desert was a true test of generalship. Men including Germany's General Rommel and Britain's General Montgomery dominated the battle with a brilliance that established their reputations on the world stage.

Solid account. I read this as a teenager and was always looking for it. A bit simplistic when read as a adult.
This is one of a series of books originally published for young readers in the 1960's. American Heritage published these books as part of their Junior Library or, in the case of books like this one which covered more than just American History, the "Horizon Caravel" series.

I have written several more in-depth reviews for other titles in these series, and the comments I made for them apply here. By all means, pick up a used hardback edition in preference to the newer paperbacks. The earlier editions include art and photography which make the books far more enjoyable. Nearly all of them are excellent. Certainly this title earned that description.

While in the strictest sense, these series were aimed at young readers, anyone can enjoy them. Once upon a time, they were very common in school libraries and I am sure many historians, armchair or otherwise, who grew up in the 60's and 70's will have fond memories of these titles. While the hardbacks are long out of print, they are easy to find on Amazon and ebay, and for the most part they are very affordable. This book is one of the best of the group.
