The MP40 Submachine Gun book. Of all infantry weapons conceived during the 20th century, few were as important as the submachine gun, a weapon designed specifically for close-quarter combat. This illustrated history examines what was arguably the best such weapon during World War II: the German MP-40.

Ingram Model 6 submachine gun is blowback operated, selective fired weapon that fired from open bolt. The only safety provided was the locking notch in the cocking handle slot, which was used to lock the bolt by its handle in cocked (retracted) position. Selection of mode of fire was made by the pull of the trigger – short pull produced single shots, and long pull produced full automatic fire.

The magazine was placed in a vertical receiving shaft under the barrel and fed ammunition with an internal spring. Such means of ammunition remained in all major modifications of weapons and did not change their design. However, at a certain point, the need for their development arose. Of all infantry weapons conceived during the 20th century, few were as important as the submachine gun, a weapon designed specifically for close-quarter combat. This illustrated history examines what was arguably the best such weapon during World War II: the German MP-40. Heavily illustrated with archival photography, cutaway drawings, and twelve color artworks, this account follows the MP-40 from its genesis in preliminary World War I designs through its use by the German forces on all fronts and its postwar service with other nations. Comprehensive appendices include full specifications and extensive comparisons with Allied contemporaries.

I am not a gun enthusiast/owner but an amateur history buff who pays particular attention to the details of the engineering of weapons. Always fascinated by the similar but different and sometimes more advanced designs of German arms, particularly those of WWII, the MP38-40 submachine gun is/was one of these. This book, along with other sources, establishes this iconic gun as the first example of a design so successful that it laid the groundwork for many similar weapons by other nations during and after the war.

I acquired the book in order to view and discover details of construction and manufacture and was pleased by the illustrations and photographs showing much of what I sought. The reading is light but easy and very informative. There are color photographs showing the breakdown of the major components, many photos of the weapon in action and information on the predecessors and some contemporaneous similar weapons. Clearly drawn cutaway views of the internal mechanism help to settle questions about its operation. I recently helped a neighbor improve on the realism and detail of his airsoft replica MP40 by referring to the excellent photos.

So, if you are an amateur historian looking to build a larger knowlege base a hobbyist looking for more information to create a better replica MP40, or a gun enthusiast looking for backgrond on this iconic weapon, I highly recommend this book.

Quality hardcover book. Written from a UK perspective, but applies to a US audience as well. Well illustrated with both black and white period photos and color photos and illustrations. Compares both the MP 38 and the MP 40. Also compares to other countries similar submachine guns and machine pistols.

If you're interested in all aspects of the MP40 this book is a must for your library.
Good history on development of the MP 40 but much less detail than I would have expected. Lots of illlustrations but many of other weapons. The detail drawing is a MP 38 not the MP 40. There must be a better source for the person who wants to understand this SMG part by part, assembly, funtioning, varients, etc.
