This book examines the combat power of the Soviet Union in a unique fashion.

Red Thrust: Attack on the Central Front, Soviet Tactics and Capabilities in the 1990s. This book examines the combat power of the Soviet Union in a unique fashion. Each chapter is devoted to a particular aspect of the modern Soviet armed forces: the tanks, motor rifle troops, special forces, attack helicopters, and so on. Each chapter begins with a fictional scenario of this element of the Soviet military forces in combat in a conventional war in Europe in the early 1990s. These fictional scenarios are complemented by an analytic essay about current and future trends in that branch of the Soviet armed forces.

This book examines the combat power of the Soviet Union in a unique fashion.

Soviet investigations found that it was Soviet explosives used in the attacks, but the Soviet press pointed an accusing finger at West Germany as being behind the NKFD activities. The propaganda campaign became so shrill that the West German government withdrew its ambassador from Berlin in late July "for consultations. Enraged by the halfhearted response of the East German Army to the martial law crisis, the GSFG commander, General Belov, decided to employ Soviet troops for crowd control for the first time. On 29 July, special Interior Army (security force) regiments brought in from the Ukraine were used to confront a large "peace" rally in Leipzig.

Book on russian tactics during the cold war. Do not know if all these tactics have changed, but most russians believe in brute force for thier offensive capablities. Book is broken down into chapter covering a specific weapon and its employment. From more recent warfare some of these tactics would meet a very bad end with modern smart weapons. Overall good book and good pictures on what the russian expect to fight. 2 people found this helpful.

Zaloga never disappoints by consistently including all you need to know and only enough secondary information to add a bit of color.

“An entertaining and evocative read, with very good analysis. The scenarios read like a cross between Clancy and Peters, but with Zaloga's expert and vast knowledge. If you want a feel for tactical warfare from the Soviet perspective during the Cold War gone hot in Europe, this is a book you must read. Highly recommended.”

Great info on the threat from my time in the army.
Apparently the Cold War/WW3 were NOTHING to be fear AT ALL. If Mr. Zaloga is to be believed the ENTIRE Soviet military were bumbling, ill-trained idiots, playing with paper mache' weapons that would INSTANTLY all be destroyed by ANY NATO encounter, but god help them should they EVEN SEE an American. From the book you'd think that the Spetznaz would run in fear from an American tourist.

Zaloga seems to be very well informed about a lot of information about the Soviet armed forces of the period... but this book is Western propaganda, through-and-through. I swear if I were a NATO commander in 1991 reading this book I'd say, "Take the month off boys, the Soviets probably couldn't even find their way here unopposed. And if Steven Zaloga is accurate, then about half their equipment will break down before they arrive.

There is lots of interesting information in this book. But it is PURE WESTERN COLD WAR PROPAGANDA.
