Series: Handbook of Denominations in the United States. Hardcover: 432 pages. This book covers a vast number of denominations, obviously not complete but close to it. Each one typically has a statistic giving its popularity, followed by a short (typically no longer than 3 or 4 pages, but sometimes shorter) summary of the denominational history and distinctives.

The religious bodies are grouped in family categories of Abrahamic religions, arranged chronologically: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Where but in the Handbook.

Atwood has added new essays and expanded and corrected old ones. Where but in the Handbook. can you find ready and reliable information about the Apostolic Lutheran Church of America (the Laestadians), located mostly where Finnish immigrants settled? Perhaps on the Internet (the Handbook now also includes a Web site address for virtually every listed denomination)-but even Googling a denomination's name might not get you this information.

One fee. Stacks of books. The information for each group within these families was provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the doctrines, statistics, and histories of institutions.

400 pages, hardcover from Abingdon.

The 12th edition of the Handbook of Denominations attempts to portray some of the depth and breadth of the major religious traditions in the United States. The religious bodies are grouped in family categories of Abrahamic religions, arranged chronologically: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The information for each group within these families was provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the doctrines, statistics, and histories of institutions. Such information is valuable for making sense of our culture and our neighbors, although much of the inner life of each denomination is not part of such a presentation. This handbook is a helpful resource for clergy, laity, journalists, and the curious who want to know more about the many facets of religious tradition in the United States today.

"For a one-volume text, I have found this work to be outstanding in its scope and depth of information! I have especially enjoyed observing the very interesting denominational changes reflected through the book's several updated editions. I began my study with your Seventh Edition in 1980." Rev. Paul Grustans, Bloomington, MN.

I liked everything in this book up until the section on Islam. The author goes far out of his way to make excuses for the religion, talking about how the concept of Jihad was introduced by Western influences. Craig casually glosses over the fact that the entire religion was expansionist and domineering from the get-go through the conquests of Muhammad, did all the people who were massacred in the name of Islam not matter then or now? He's better off just leaving the political discussion out of it and being more actualist in describing the religion's history and sects.

The Handbook of Denominations is an excellent source of information on most religious bodies in the United States. It is detailed an unbiased, giving facts, rather than opinions. It doesn't dwell on the negative, but focuses on the real. So, it can be recommended as a source of information on most religions on the US. At the same time, it doesn't skip over or whitewash facts. So, I'd recommend it for anyone doing research on mainstream or non-mainstream religions such as Christian Science, Latter Day Saints, Jehovah's Witnesses, or less well known religions such as Christadelphians, it has some great information, without creating judgments.

This book covers all the main Christian denominations. It groups them into categories, such as describing 7 different Lutheran denominations. First the characteristics of the group are presented, and then those of the individual denominations within the group. The belief and worship characteristics are giiven. The number of adherents are listed if known. A very thorough coverage. Highly recommended.

This book is the most inclusive denominations book I've seen yet. However, in the all-inclusiveness it loses many pertinant details specific to the denominations, choosing to lean more on the history of the denominations instead. Some of the terminology can be cumbersome and far above that that the average reader may understand. Still, it does give a little insight and has a reasonably good index, so it's probably worth the money. Just don't expect it to be your stand-alone resource on the topic.

better than shelly steig's finding the right church, better than the complete guide to christian denominations, better than the pocket guide to denominations, better than any of them! Better than Navigating Christian Organizations, Hands-down best guide over them all!

Do not buy another guide, this one will do it all and then some, and you won't regret your purchase!

This book came in excellant shape. It was described to me very truthfully and was true to that description. The store I purchased it through told me it would arrive in a certain number of days and it did. I was very happy.
Exactly the book I needed, in great condition.
