The book arrived in a timely manner but was more worn than the description of "Used-Very Good" implied. I wouldn't described the condition of the book as any better than "Good." I might think twice before ordering from them again.

First of all, don't be scared by the price. Go down to the FORMAT box and you'll find this book
very cheap. My copy cost me only $2.00. It was printed in Japan and very nicely too. Anyone who
wants to go beyond the usual narrow focus of most film books will be delighted. As another reviewer
pointed out, this book will stimulate your curiosity in many unusual ways.

I've read lots of books about movies, but this one is marvelously original. The photos are
completely different from the usual suspects, and Sklar must have dug very deeply indeed to find
most of them. Yes, there are a lot of subjects and topics, and these subjects are not treated in
an encyclopedic fashion, but in each case the focus is radically different from the usual formula.
Also, the extensive bibliography is organized by chapters, so if a particular topic interests
you, it's possible to use the bibliography to zoom through Amazon and find at least 15 other books
that will give further details. And these books will also have bibliographies, etc. etc. So if you
have to grind out a quick paper for your film class, you can go to this book, identify four or
five other source books, and get off to a fast start. Dare I suggest that you could also start
a Ph.D. thesis in the same fashion?

This may not be the longest movie encyclopedia in the world, but most of what you'll find inside
will be new to most film buffs. As I stated above, go to Amazon's FORMAT box and you can get a copy
for less than $5.00. You won't be sorry that you did. Just make sure that your friends don't swipe
it!

This is a fairly good introduction into international film. Its relative brevity is perhaps a plus for beginning students of film, who do not want to buy several books. But I found it inadequate. It only briefly mentions the major names, films, styles, themes, movements, etc, and as a survey its approach is too linear. Supplemental books are needed to get a satisfactory understanding of the history. The book is a summary that works to increase your curiosity.
