Ah, the pickerel of Walden! when I see them lying on the ice, or in the well which the fisherman cuts in the ice . They, of course, are Walden all over and all through; are themselves small Waldens in the animal kingdom, Waldenses.

Ah, the pickerel of Walden! when I see them lying on the ice, or in the well which the fisherman cuts in the ice, making a little hole to admit the water, I am always surprised by their rare beauty, as if they were fabulous fishes, they are so foreign to the streets, even to the woods, foreign as Arabia to our Concord.

While the puzzles are small (and so is the book - so it's nice and sturdy if you don't have a clipboard), they're very challenging. While a normal weekday crossword in the newspaper is 15x15, these puzzles are 10x10. But that definitely doesn't make them easy! Probably not the best book to buy if you're a crossword neophyte. If you're new to crosswords, I recommend finding either New York Times or Peter Gordon (New York Sun) puzzles that are marked as Monday or Tuesday. But if you're an aficionado of crosswords, you'll certainly appreciate these gems.

Only a few really difficult clues--these are smaller than average puzzles. Good for when you don't have a lot of time but want a challenge.

I bought this for my wife, assuming it was composed of tough crosswords. Instead, they were very basic. Sent it to my granddaughter, so nothing lost, but these could be better described.

I was disappointed in this book. Two-thirds of the puzzles are comparable in difficulty to New York Times Wednesday puzzles---mildly challenging, but not tough at all. Those that are a little harder, say at the Thursday level, are not because of clever clues and answers, which are what I had expected, but because of the use of many proper names---stars and characters of recent movies and TV shows, rock star performers and their albums, etc. Elder solvers like me need to look up (or peek at) those answers. I have been a great admirer of Byron Walden's crossword puzzles, but I will be more careful next time.
