A Berkley Book, published by arrangement with the author. The 4-D men did not speak again until they pulled off the county road onto the track that ran around a low-slung, almost windowless, large commercial building. At the rear of the building was an empty stockyard that was a sea of trampled mud.

When his daughter, Becky, becomes ill from bacterial poisoning, Dr. Kim Reggis, a cardiac surgeon, is determined to track down the cause, no matter what the cost
Great story that kept me, typical of Robin Cook, on the edge of my seat. Just at the point where it was getting very exciting and I was anticipating a gripping ending, it ended with a 'write your own' conclusion. Seems the political purpose of the book became paramount.
How could it just end like that? Just when it was finally getting somewhere good, it just ended! Could have gone without a lot of the drs tantrums, but would have like more than what I got in the ending.
Well thought out plot that has a basis in the current world of medicine. Definitely thought provoking. As a nurse, the potential scares me for humanity.
I was surprised by a few things in this book. First, the "son" who died, as described in the book summary, was a daughter. For a while I was waiting for the son to appear. Second, the protagonist is a total jerk. I never found anything redeeming about him. Third, the usual medical thriller we've come to expect from Robin Cook quickly became an expose about the meat industry - something I never wanted to read about. I did finish it, but only because I've learned - sometimes to my dismay - to finish what I start. I do not recommend the book unless you want to become a vegetarian. This might help you with that.
I really tried to finish this book, but I just couldn't do it. The story line is fine its the characters inter-action that became so unbelievable. If I didn't know better I would think this was the first attempt at writing, that is how bad the characters are in this novel. Too bad as the storyline itself was actually pretty good but the flat characters and stilted writing style killed it for me.
Another good book by Robin Cook. Didn't want to put it down until I read the last page. It is so disgusting the way he described what goes on at meat packing plants. There is so many ways that the meat can get contaminated along the kill floor and the finished product. You might want to read this book before you make fun of vegetarians.
I was disappointed in this one. I've read Robin Cook before and generally like him. In this particular book, he definitely has a point of view and an agenda he's pushing. I'm fine with the agenda (hey, no one wants E. coli in their meat), but it made the book awkward and preachy as characters went off on "educational" speeches on a near-constant basis.

The doctor character was also a bit much. I buy that a father would be bereaved in the circumstances, but his behavior was just not realistic. Overall, not one of my faves from this author.
This is the first Robin Cook book I have read since Coma which was many years ago. I also enjoyed that one as well. I found that the plot in Toxin was fast paced, the character development was excellent, and allowed me to consider the food industry a bit! I would recommend it to those that like medical suspense plots.
