Dorothy Gilman will always hold a spot as one of my two favorite authors. If you're a fan of her Mrs. Pollifax series, the countess series will not disappoint you. If you haven't read any Gilman novels yet, good heavens, you're really missing out. Get them all, and be sure to read them in the correct order. All of them. There are 24 novels you need to read immediately.

This novel is a little jaunt into the world of a clairvoyant, so if you have a prejudice against a light bit of "supernatural" involvement in a book, then move along. This book is a string of little mysteries; if you like supernatural, or cozies, or mysteries, you'll love this book. It's perhaps too short, if I had a complaint, but this novel is one that I snack on at least once every year or two. They're so easy to read, and so delightfully eccentric.

This is about my fifth copy of the book; between what I give away and what falls apart from wear, I want to make sure I'm never left without another copy of this brilliant novel to re-read There is some violence of course; after all, one of the protagonist is a police detective. But descriptions of murder and assault are kept to an absolute minimum; the descriptions of psychic evil are actually more disturbing.

Being a fan of the Mrs. Pollifax series, it seems that the stories of Madame Karitzka are a bit disjointed and random. But after a couple of chapters, you begin to see a pattern of characters, comments on life, and observations that are not random at all. Dorothy Gilman was so talented at portraying humans as fallible, humorous, strong yet vulnerable. We are lucky to have her books to read over and over again.

Years ago I read all of the Mrs Pollifax books and was delighted with them. The Clairvoyant Countess is equally delightful. It has the same spirit (pardon the pun), of adventure. She does a great job of describing the process of reading someone.

For anyone who is a non-believer, give it a chance. There is more in and out of the world than can be easily believed.

Feb 3, 2012 - Dorothy Gilman, died at 88. She was an espionage writer whose best-known heroine was Mrs. Pollifax, but the The Clairvoyant Countess, The Nun on a Closet and many others make for excellent reading and a short escape from daily stress and worries. You can read her books over and over and enjoy each reading.

This book gripped me right from the first words. What I really enjoyed about it was that it was episodic and not one mystery story that lasted through the whole book. Every single episode was very interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. I have the second book about the Countess but have not yet read it. Looking forward to starting it this evening. I recommend this book very highly. It's different but definitely a good read. I'm already wishing there were more than 2 in this series.

This writer is very talented. She has a profound way with words that wrap around your mind and linger. I find her style not only pushes the thoughts but also stirs the heart. Nice!
After reading this book, I was hooked! What a delightful writer, to entertain me to the point that I am ordering more of her books . These are the type of books that one will re-read with enjoyment.
