What really gives this item 5 stars is the fact that it is an oversized edition (12.5 x 9.4 x 0.4 inches) and the print and artwork are very readable compared to the regular sized editions of this graphic novel, which has tiny print and the artwork is often hard to make out. Be warned, however, that the oversized edition is divided into three separate books (Nebraska, Discovery, and Mot), but Humanoids never published the third book (MOT) in the oversized version. I wrote to Humanoids about this and this is what they said: "Thank you for contacting us. Volume 3 was unfortunately not published in the oversized format as we had stopped production at the time due to changes in our approach to format and page count. Volume 3 is now available digitally, or as you mention, as part of any of the 2 collected editions (SC or HC) we've put out in recent years."

The hardback volume is a masterpiece of the
craft.

It is over-sized, has hard, glossy covers with
sturdy binding, a magnificently-illustrated
wrap-around cover and awesome illustrated
end-pages.

The interior illustrations are first-class. One
may have a tendency to skim through them
to get along with the story but it is worth
lingering over each one to appreciate the
quality, imagination and detail of each panel.

The story itself is gripping and convoluted.
It has a bit of authentic history at the beginning,
then leaps into the near-future. There are
mysteries, fear and a frightful, fascinating
underwater setting. There is an unusual attention
to the characterization and the back-stories of the
main protagonists. The tension that the crew
undergoes is credible.

In sum, it is the finest graphic novel that I have
ever seen.

In 1944 Berlin, a group of Nazis discover strange Sumerian remains in an ancient series of catacombs.

In 1957, an act of violence inside a Russian submarine destroys the vessel and everyone on board.

Then, in 2029, the USS Nebraska, a gigantic state-of-the-art sub, heads out on a routine mission near the coast of Syria. Then their navigator, seemingly without realization, leads them off-course, plunging them into largely unexplored caverns far below. A mysterious signal appears from somewhere down there - which is next to impossible, because the Nebraska is the only sub in the area capable of reaching such depths. And then...even stranger things begin to happen.

This first entry in the SANCTUM series is definately captivating. Christopher Bec's artwork is highly detailed and beautiful. The story (of which I had no prior knowledge) is mysterious and unpredictable. My only real complaint is of the lack of transition; too much of the time there's a major shift between scenes or locations without any note or indication of such, save for the characters appearing therein (and it doesn't help that the bulk of the story takes place INside the confinements of a submarine). But otherwise, the story is fairly easy to follow, and this book ends with an effective cliffhanger.

Can't wait to read #2: Discovery!
